Week 35/36 US Open New York Hard

Not sure I like Kudermatova pulling out of doubles , presumably cos shes in singles qf. I know singles is bigger butpresume a convenient injury to her partner; or one she has that will miraculously be fine tomorrow

So, now, as of the third round, Clara Burel (FRA) age 21 is the only one left who can 'do an Emma' - the only qualifier left in

Well done to Clara - indeed, the French are quite happy with three women still going (Clara, Cornet and Garcia, who's looking very comfortable out there)

The new wave of very young Czech players has now fizzled, leaving only the old guns, Kvitova and Pliskova

Four Chinese women make a strong contingent - always had a soft spot for Zheng, still only 19, having seen her live at the BoE club a couple of years ago

And then, of course, eight American players - a nice big bunch, going from Coco right up to Serena, and only one all-American tie in the next round

Yue Yuan is also a qualifier

Yue Yuan won't be matching Emma's feat as Jessica Pegula beat her in the 3rd round

In the last 16 women's in the US Open, there's a miles better continent distribution in the women's than in the men's (which is Europe: 14; Rest of the World: 2)

Europe: 9
North America: 4
Asia: 1
Australia/Oceania: 1
Africa: 1

In terms of countries, the top country is USA (unlike in the men, which is Russia and Spain).
Which is slightly strange - 15 years back, say, there was a glut of Russian women players and very few Russian men. THere are now more Russian men at this stage than women.

But, overall, a very good spread

USA: 4
Russia: 2

Belorussia: 2
Czechia: 2
France: 1
Tunisia: 1
Australia: 1
Germany: 1
Poland: 1
China: 1

12 are seeded
4 are unseeded

Big gap in the top seeds though:
Of the top 8, only 4 remain, and eliminated are the: 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th seeds

And - again conversely to what we've taken to be true - the women are older than the men:

Aged 30 and over: 5
Aged 21 and younger: 2

Average age: 27.1875

This makes the women a full 12 months older than the men, on average.

And again, very tall:

6 of the women are 180 cm or more.
Only one is less than 170cm.
Average height: 177.75 cm

Im going to pick Garcia to win this, shes playing some brilliant powerful dominant tennis. Should really have been a Slam winner with the talent she has.

I've got a big eye on her too - as you say, there's so much power and talent there - but often a bit all over the place in terms of tactics/focus - maybe linked to having her dad SO present in her tennis for so long?

It does feel like it's her time - I'm just not 100% sure she'll keep it together for that long....

Looking good as Garcia has strode through her first four matches. We now have a Garcia vs Gauff QF. Very interesting

Only saw the first set but the Gauff Zheng match was the best women's match I've seen so far this year. Best tennis by far.
Garcia's first set v Riske was awful - but then, you win what you've got to win - and, yes, it's a really juicy quarter-final .....

Looking good, Jagster !

And my 50p is in the money

Not sure whether to cash in........ probably not, what the hell smile

Caro has been very forthright about what's changed (and I expect Emma would nod, in agreement, but still rather lost....)

She's changed her trainer. Got rid of her dad at the end of last year. Appointed the trainer who used to help Paul Henri Matthieu and also Ons Jabeur. He has told her clearly what she's got to do. That she MUST impose her game, be offensive, believe in her shots... I think age has cleared her head slightly too - she says she's more focused now, time is ticking, and also more confident, less concerned about how it all looks....

And she's appointed a fulltime physio, because Caro has had major problems with her back and her feet, in particular. And the new woman is dedicated 24/7 to her body, so to speak, and supposedly has worked wonders in keeping it in top nick. Caro says she feels in great shape, for the first time in ages.

There are lots of articles in the French press obviously, but here's one:

I've backed Garcia ages ago (e/w) but right now I am concerned that Ons may give her trouble, especially as she gets more nervous as the rounds progress. Fingers crossed, not that I don't like Ons either.

Well done, you - you'll have got way better odds than me

And, yes, Caro v Ons is a really exciting semi

I saw Ons' match last night against Aijla and thought she played a phenomenal match, not just good tennis but good tennis when it really mattered too

I like Ons a lot - so wouldn't be sad if she won

I don't care at all between Sabalenka and Pliskova

I hope Iga v Pegula is a good match, for the crowd, as much as anything

(NB Does anyone think it's relevant that Pegula's family is worth $7 billion? In either sense? Does it detract because she's had all the help that money can buy, and zero worry about not making the hotel bills or whatever - or does it make it MORE amazing that she's prepared to put in all the hard graft when she really doesn't need to?)

For some reason Emma has taken a wildcard in to Portoroz. If she was adding a week Chennai would have made more sense (much weaker field, closer to Seoul if she's still going).

And it is SO good to see Caro in full flow. Such a great player to watch when it works. Looking forward to her vs Ons.

I'm  inclined  to admire her for her efforts really.  Who knows,  there may be personal reasons that motivated her, proving to herself and others perhaps?

Emma seems to have Portoroz (at least it is on hardcourt), Seoul and then a weeks break and then she is back in Europe first week in October in the WTA500 field for Ostrava. The Asian trip seems strange for WTA reasons, they have Tokyo and Seoul the same week as opposed to back to back, making it a one week trip for all concerned.

I think you will find Emma top seed in Portoroz because seedings are based on 22nd August rankings. Not sure if that will be good or bad for Emma. Certainly flying from Portoroz to South Korea is a long way.
