And maybe its her level - occasionally in, usually just outside the top 100, floating between a high of 80 and around 150.
A lot of players , men and women, reach that level and just arent able to get past it. Liam is showing that broad tendency (maybe not top 100), Heather has, lots in the not too distant past.
And winning a round or so at the odd slam , with the odd upset, fits in with that.
I can see Harriet having a Heather type career bobbing between 50 (at best) and 150 which is still a good career. Shes still getting experience at this level as well. Today was a great chance to be number 1 and go deep but womens tennis is like this. Should still be main draw for Aus Open you would expect.
I don't think today told us much about Harriet's normal level - it was obviously a bad day. She does need to find a way of dealing with minor distractions in matches, but she can definitely hang at this level, which makes her one of the most successful British players of the last several decades.

I would agree with all of that. Shes certainly going to be one of the most successful over the last 30 odd years anyway, regardless of what happens in the future.
Settling down to watch the GOAT play what I think will be her last match. Quite emotional I have to say. Shes been a tennis player all my adult life. Im sure many feel the same.

Apart from the victory over Kasatkina Harriet hasn't actually had a great US swing, just one other MD win in Granby.

Wow what a final point remarkable high lob returns going deep for both and Serena saves a break point and dances through the air to smash drive home a volley. Retiral is a life choice not a body choice for Serena. She could easily play on if her circumstances were different. One more game needed.
WOW. Kontaveit would've beaten 90% of the WTA in straight sets here - played really well. We've not seen that Serena since before Olympia. What. A. Match.

I love that Harriet plays the biggest tournaments that she can get into however, the consequence of that is that it is difficult for her to put a run together. IMO if she wants to stick with that admirable strategy then she needs to enter the doubles too to get more time on court. I do wonder if she isn't 100% fit because she is a very good doubles player so it seems odd to me that she wouldn't enter doubles too. Or maybe her ranking isn't quite high enough in which case drop down a level, enter both tournaments, get a better doubles ranking and then come back to the big tournaments
