Max Basing

I think it might be an auspicious time to start a thread for Max ....

I first watched him on some livestream when he was in Spain, and was impressed. And then on the livestream for the UP Pro League, or one of those events during lockdown, and was VERY impressed. Then saw a bit of livestream from one of the UTR events in the USA - and was sorely disappointed....

However, the last few months have seen it all moving very much in the right direction so:

Max is from Surrey but went to the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain for all his tennis training as a teenager

His dad is Nick Basing, who was/is a Non-Exec Director at Wimbledon for 7 years, and has just been appointed to the ATP Board as Player Rep (I think he was a good senior player himself). He's also a successful man (fund manager, chairman and CEO of various companies etc etc)

Max is currently 19 and is at Stanford at the moment

He got his a little ATP ranking back at the start of 2020

But suddenly this year has taken off - he made the semis at Nottingham 25k, beating Catarina (ATP 494) along the way

And has just beaten a guy ranked about 500 at Aldershot

Lovely fluid game, good racket head speed, there's a lot of good stuff in his game.....

Thanks CD.

Really loving seeing all these players blossoming at the moment. Nice to hear their backgrounds too.

Max finishes his college career described as "the most clutch player in college tennis", although Charlie Robertson also gets described that.
He gets this title by getting the "clinch point" in all 3 of Stanford's matches in the ACC championships and in the NCAA Championship QFs saving 7 match points and turning a 5-2 3rd set deficit into a win which including come back from 4-5 *0-40. By all accounts he played unbelievable tennis on those match points and there was nothing his opponent could do.

He contributed to Stanford men's best season for several years, where they finished 4th in the team rankings, won the ACC Championships in their inaugural season in the ACC and reached the NCAA semi-final for the first time in 22 years. They had the most wins for 25 years.

On an individual level he was
71-26 in his career in singles, 58-19 in dual play. 20th in program history in career dual wins
Finished season ranked No. 85 in the country in singles. Season-high ranking in singles was no. 71, doubles was No. 50, alongside Alex Razeghi
20-7 in singles this season, including a 17-4 record in dual action. 10-2 against ACC opponents

His college career accolades include
ACC Champions (2025)
Pac-12 Champions (2024)
ACC Championship Most Valuable Player (2025)
ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year (2022)
All-Pac-12 first team (2023)
Two-time All-Pac-12 second team (2022, 2024)
All-ACC third team (2025)
