I watched the majority of Andy's match during my break on nightshift last night and its the first time Ive actually thought he should quit. He never really threatened Fritz at all and struggled on his own serve. He was highly frustrated and had a least 3 racket throws including match point. I think deep down he knows hes not going to go deep again in any tournament bar the odd 250. Andys game isnt really one that the modern players struggle with now as much as they did maybe 5-10 years ago.
With Serena announcing her retirement Im going to say Andy will be next, if not be year end then a Wimbledon finish. Hes beating himself up out there and cant be enjoying losing so easily. I dont actually think Rafa will be far behind him. Olympics at RG will be his last. And Roger as well probably the same time. The next 2 or 3 Slams are going to see 3 or 4 of these greats finally go which will be sad but all things must end I suppose.
Im sort of with you, Jaggy, but not sure it will be that long for Roger - I dont think the Olympics was that special to him. Rafa at RG 2024 sounds neat , if his foot allows then he might well do that. I personally think Roger will give it a go to
Play the slams next year and call it quits then, perhaps after Wimbledon. I also think it will be dawning on Andy, and he will call it quits next season but wonder if Wimbledon would be his end. Next years Wimbledon could be a massive one!

It's heavily rumoured that Fed's participation at Laver Cup and Basel is his farewell.

And it wouldnt surprise me - I just have a feeling hed probably like one last Wimbledon; it feels like hed retire there as would Andy and Rafa at Paris- Djoko no idea when the time comes. a bit like Serena has chosen New York as an emotional place to stop.
Putting aside retirement thoughts, Andy could go into US Open severely undercooked. If Djoko and Nadal dont play Cinci, he could probably get in there without a wild card (one remains to be offered), but my concern would be an early exit again with the wrong draw. Rather than a main draw wild card (not guaranteed) maybe he could take a QWC and get a couple of matches in qualies, it might help him more; an alternative plan might be to play Vancouver Challenger but Andy seems to prefer the bigger events. If he had another early exit next week, the next option might be to play Winston Salem the following week where there are wild cards still to be allocated; maybe he should do that if he plays Cinci and goes out early again?
Andy must know it is not happening for him. He was no contest for Fritz and none of the higher players I believe will also have any problem against him. Yes, he is still a good player and on a really good day can take anyone out. But we all know that he wants to compete and get to the latter stages of events. I just don't see it. Be better to call it a day and move into coaching where he could probably be very effective. Like I said in a different post I don't want to see Andy just slip away on early defeats for the next year. He's done us proud but surely it's time to really start the next chapter of his life. Whatever that may be.
