Week 31 - ITF W25 - Foxhills, Great Britain Hard

You beat me to Alicia vs Jasmine which I had just noticed in addition to the two ties I mentioned and was going to add.. So from our 7 DAs and WCs we have 3 all British ties.

Indianna has drawn the 8th seed.

I assume no SE since the Nottingham final was on Saturday and Foxhills Q started on Sunday.

Like last week our 4 highest MD entries are paired up in two matches. This time Anna vs Maia and Freya vs Naiktha.

No. She was eligible for a SE if she requested it. As well as still competing in an over-lapping tournament a player is also entitled to a SE if they are competing in the final of an eligible tournament that completes the day before qualifying starts for the following weeks tournament and they are on the qualifying acceptance list. It's the 2nd time this year the LTA have given a WC to someone who was eligible for a SE.

Annoyingly, Alicia is playing Jasmine, Maia is playing Anna and Freya is playing Naiktha. I know it means some guaranteed wins for the second round, but also some guaranteed losses too.

Ha, Indiana beat me to it!

Given Jasmine lost in the first round of qualis last week and Alicia, with a wildcard, lost in the first round of the main daw, I think that's an excellent draw for those two

Both Freya and Naiktha would give their eye teeth for a win, so that's a winner too, IMO

Maia and Anna, however, is a little more unfortunate - both of them had a better chance of wins in the non-Brit main draw

Big congrats to Alice Gillan who defeated Talia - always a good chance - the bookmakers were a little over-optimistic for Talia who's had relatively little success in adult tennis since Birmingham

Nice win too for Lauryn, over a higher-ranked player

And ditto for Emma

Was pointed to this forum by a friend as Talia is mentioned. Just to say shes still 16 Give her some time to develop emotional control as well as tennis. The last 3 events at Notts she lost to the winner in the first round, 2nd round, 1st round so I think its a little harsh to say shes had little success - shes had some great opportunities for tough matches. Shes learning all the time, switching between juniors and womens, different surfaces, was coping with exam stresses this year.   Is she disappointed with todays result? Of course she is. But thats all part of the journey. As her mother I perhaps should not be responding to the comments but others have highlighted them to me several times.

That must be tough to be the mum sometimes! I guess we don't always think the people involved are reading this forum! I don't think anyone means to be harsh and are just talking about overall results and form. This means the nuance is often lost, i.e. how difficult the draw is, what other competing events are going on in the players lives', what injuries they've had, even that they might be trying a different style of play (e.g. different  service action). This is usually because we're not often privy to this kind of information.

Incidentally I saw Thalia play at Surbiton quailes and she played well in the match I watched. It must be difficult indeed to switch between girls and women's tennis. Her coach was very supportive as well which was good to see. That isn't always the case, unfortunately. But everyone here is right behind all our young players and want them to do well. There may be some criticism at times about particular aspects of play or developing resilience but it is not meant to be damning. I look forward to seeing Thalia develop and grow in confidence and skill. Thanks for all the sacrifices you make as a parent so that we can enjoy them play.

I don't think so, actually, Nix.

We all know that there are a lot of players and family members who tune into this board - some post, some don't, but I know mums and dads of players, siblings, even several Grandmas, who all follow this forum, some avidly, some dipping in and out.

And no one here is ever rude or overly critical - indeed, the amount of support is sometimes criticised itself for being 'blind optimism'

BUT there is nothing at all against Talia in saying simply that she has basically had one very good tournament in adults, and not much else, hence the odds against Alice were skewed. There are zillions of other posts (from me and plenty of others), talking about the players going forward, our support for them, how not to expect too much etc. Not every post has to be prefaced with all that, if it just a statement of fact.

Thank you for your kind message. You are right in what you say about Not knowing the nuances or knowing whats going on behind the scenes and its important to remember they are still children who happen to love playing tennis and are doing their best. I do not want  to sound like I am making excuses and I am well aware of the fantastic opportunities tennis has provided  Talia, but I will provide a bit of context.  These young players are still attending school, they are not full time tennis players as yet, Sure as Coup Droit pointed out Talias results from February have not been replicated - yet. However since then shes sat 7 weeks of GCSE exams (stretched out this year to allow for any covid incidents)  whilst trying to train and compete (even sitting some exams down at Wimbledon High School during the competition)  from May the reduced training due to sitting 14 exams was on grass, had a fabulous time at Wimbledon and competed hard. A few days rest before going on the clay and competing at the European Championships in Switzerland. Back home on the Saturday night, 1 day rest before competing on the Tuesday on hard court at Nottingham versus seed 2. This time last year Talia was coming back from a very serious ankle injury and had 8 months out of competition - so we view the last 12 months as a great success and a test of her resilience. Still lots of work to do but thats what great about this sport, theyre forever learning.  Now I dont want to sound defensive or moaning  - this is what she loves doing, just a reminder that behind the name is a young player trying their best.

There were some lovely Q slots in the main draw, and some not so nice .....

Poor Eliz and Alice have got the short straws - with the second and third seeds

Emma is playing Tamira - two qualifers together

Lauryn is playing Kat S. - again two qualifiers

Ok - but could have been better....

Jng, welcome - there were a lot of posts about poor Talia's ankle injury in the juniors thread, and lots of posts in general about the need to balance playing with school - it's a big problem for so many players, and now goes on into college ages too.

You're welcome. Talia indeed seems to have had a huge amount on her plate. My son has just done A levels and is not a full time tennis player at the same time and yet has got long Covid, in part I believe due to the stress of exams. It's tough being a teenager and Talia sounds like she's had a very busy time recently. I'm sure it hasn't helped having the ankle injury as I imagine you build up your stamina over time.

As I say, the posters here are passionate supporters of our players, and certainly don't mean to be discouraging. CD in particular has been involved in high level young people's tennis and knows what is involved behind the scenes. I hope you'll continue to post with updates about Talia. It's great to hear how they're doing.
