Yeah, she has two match points, I made it - rather like Lauryn - one that got away.....

Dani lost too

Gosh - how close for Abigail.... :(

So, there were three really close misses. In three GB v pesky MTBs. That's sad....

BUT great to see a good win for Marni. And super ones for Millie and Grace and Angie.

And to see Katy back, of course

And Maia on form

A decent day - just wish one of those three had fallen our way....

Q1: GILLAN, Alice (GBR) (14) 886 def ANANE, Soumeya (GBR) UNR 6-0 6-0

Just wish that tie wasn't two old timers like Alice and Soumeya who've both been round a bit.

All about youngsters these days confuse

Interesting match-up this morning between Grace and Millie

There's a WTA point, and a place in the main draw of a 25k on offer......

Millie is quite a tall, well-built player, with a lot of power and strong-hitting. Some great forehands. Good serve. But rather too many unforced errors - sometimes really just sprays the ball - needs to be in position

Grace is a more canny player, with good reflexes, picks the ball up well, and makes it difficult for the opponent. But doesn't have the weapons of Millie.

Millie is the overwhelming bookies favourite which I find a little strange - I've seen Grace win some tough matches

Congrats to Millie

It was very close in the first, edgy set - which Grace won 7-5

But Millie settled down, cut out some errors, and won the second easily

And she played a super MTB - really went for it and trusted in her tennis, and there was nothing Grace could do

Into the MD

Sorry but I really disagree with the apparent sentiment of that comment.   Those who continue to play after their early 20's should be commended and encouraged. It is they who, by carrying on, really demonstrate their enthusiasm for the game. Often they will improve later in their careers. In any case their entries serve as a good benchmark for younger players. It is 'youngsters' who get all the help and all the wild cards. Besides which Alice (born in 1998) is hardly an 'old-timer'!

Yikes Alice is only 24. Surely that doesn't label you an old timer. Plus we are starting to see some of our players produce their best tennis and rankings high in their late 20's.

Marni's best ranking scalp will actually remain a February 2020 Sunderland L32 6-3 7-6(5) win over Jesika Maleckova WR 323 after coming through qualifying.

She was again looking some prospect in 2020 before the pandemic struck. For she then in the Sunderland L16 only lost 5-7 3-6 to a certain Emma Raducanu WR 366 who she had previously been competitive with in juniors ( Emma reached the final ). Also in January 2020, as a QWC into the WTA Adelaide International, she had taken the first set from Daria Kasatkina WR 68. Lost 6-3 1-6 3-6.

Such a pity that, just as those of us who had been looking for her to come through were feeling very optimistic, the pandemic arrived and that she has evidently had a few other issues in recent years  But there is certainly a player there if she can stay fit and well!
