Interesting that Ali has not partnered Emily Appleton ( in Latvia this week ) since they apparently played very well in losing in a MTB in the WTA Birmingham 250 to the highly ranked Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching, after which PaulM, as well as commenting on their good play and potential, wrote:
"Their opponents really found a new gear midway through the breaker. Shame about the ill-tempered and slightly immature end from Ali, but a lot of pressure and she will have wanted it very badly I know."
Who knows if they may have been close to a Wimbledon WC, especially if they had won that match. But I do wonder if they have gone their separate ways, at least for the time being.
R1: GREY, Sarah Beth (GBR) (5) 291 =CH v BROGAN, Anna (GBR) Q 486 =CH
My two great hopes on here meet sadly, both could have gone deep. Written off by some on here for Sarah Beth as a doubles player, and Anna apparently not capable of being any higher than top 500.
Great to see them both digging in and showing they still have career hopes
Jaggy, great that two players you have championed have progressed as they have and Beth would no doubt have been further ahead without that medical concern and time out.
Regarding Anna, yes at least a couple of us did come back on your prediction of Anna making the top 500 this year, basing our thoughts on her results since her comeback.
I didn't though see anyone write her off in the long term, especially as I have noted her being in the 500s as a teenager. I have proved to be wrong about Anna's short-term top 500 prospects and it is great that her Georgia W25 triumph gave her such a rankings boost and hopefully also a confidence boost.
I imagine that most folk making predictions appreciate some honest comment and feedback and not just being ignored or just nodding dog feedback.
It won't be for both this week but wishing all the best to the ongoing progress of both Beth and Anna.
