Weeks 26 and 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's singles

Great to see Ons Jabeur in a SF.

Be an interesting SF vs Tatjana Maria in being a meeting between clearly big friends. Got to fancy Ons to reach the final though.

I really like both Tatjana and Ons. Really great feel good story to see them both doing well. Ons v Simona would be a great final! If Im not being clearly too presumptive on the other side of the draw

I've been a fan of Ons for ages but never thought she would be a Grand Slam contender. A bit like Cam she talked herself up before making a big jump in level.

Overall I'd like to see Halep win the title but Anisimova has been playing herself into form

Jabeur and Bouzkova are tremendous assets to the WTA - very much loved by their fellow competitors, and it's marvellous to see the respect the ladies on this side of the draw have for one another

Tatjana Maria. What a story.

34 I believe, married with 2 children.
Husband is her coach.
Showing that after all this time you can still reach new heights.

I wonder if going forward we will see a lot more female players in their 30's married with kids still playing singles to a high level.
It's great to see what somebody can still achieve.

Really happy for Simona. She's probably my favourite outside the British players. In fact, I like all the semifinalists. I didn't really have an opinion of Tatjana Maria before this tournament, but it's a great story.

Elena Rybakina wins the first set of the semi-final 6-3. This is the first set that Simona has lost at Wimbledon since the second round of her run to the title in 2019. She needs to show some real championship grit to get back into this one now.

Rybakina into the final. Who would have picked her at the beginning.

Hilarious that they ban Russian players and one still makes a final

 Yes.

But this will be one which will presumably annoy the Russians hugely so that'll be good biggrin

Elena only played in a group of 8 till age 15, I think it was.

Then in a group of4

Basically, no individual coaching at all, the Russians didn't rate her - hence she was very happy to accept the Kazakh offer in 2018

Bit like cam norrie really

Rybakina is the 2nd player born in Moscow to reach the Wimbledon ladies singles final. Olga Morozova born in Moscow was runner up  in 1974.

It wasn't a reference to how much she owed to Russia as I had no idea. I know there are other Russians don't have much to do with the mother country other than having that pesky flag next to their name so it does highlight the arbitrariness of the decision.

I don't think it was arbitrary - the decision was uniform - against all players who play under the Russian flag

No one is looking at blood ties or whatever - it's the official affiliation that counts - just as it did with all other boycotts

And, as said, it'll probably annoy the Russians so all's good
