Haddad Maia is fast becoming one of my least favourite players to watch. The drugs ban doesn't help and adds suspicion to this rise (especially since she has won her last 9 3 setters, or 17 of 20 this year), but her grunt is hideous, as well as her loudly cheering pretty much every opponent error. Her match vs Frech was suspended yesterday due to darkness, and she was instrumental in that decision, and she is 2-4 down in the final set and would have to face Giorgi in the final QF match should she turn it around, so a lot of work to do, but I'm almost at the stage of actually rooting for Halep to beat Katie later on just to make another potential grass final for the Brazilian less likely, although that will change if Frech does beat her (assuming that's concluded before Katie starts).
There's definitely something UK grass court season about Vekic. She was based here when working with Felgate in her teens, and that probably plays a big part in her scheduling, but I don't think she's ever played a grass event outside of the UK, and she always seems to have at least one solid run in the 250s, most notably Nottingham, plus those epic battles with Jo over the years. She's had a tough couple of years, and is much lower ranked at the moment, but I definitely think this season would seem strange without her presence.
Fortunate to be there today. Very hot conditions but that is really not a reason for the level of play in the Halep/Boulter match. By far the worst level of the 4 matches. Both players were far from their best.
The score flatters Katie I'm afraid. Halep's serve was basically woeful almost the entire match and with one or two exceptions Boulter couldn't take advantage of powder puff serves at basically 75 miles an hour with nothing on them. I really feel Katie's level has regressed over the last two years. her serve was pretty average today and most of her ground shots were simply sent back down the middle of the court. Her net play was less than convincing and her response to some pretty basic drop shops was really poor too.
On such a hot day Halep barely needed to break sweat to win.
I thought Zhang looked quite classy though Yastremska was playing her usual game with little plan B. Haddad Maia was really impressive against Georgi after the first three games and is playing some good tennis right now. Cirstea and Vekic was a good battle. Vekic ran out of steam a bit at the end but the level was quite high for most of the match from both players.
