Week 24 - WTA250 - Birmingham, Great Britain Grass

Looking forward to Eden and Beth scooping up the 25k titles and points that will follow in July and August. Both should be capable of pushing up to the 250 mark given their competitive matches against players in the top 150.

The bottom half of the Birmingham main draw looks like Nottingham part 2 .  11 of the 16 players played at Nottingham.

Must be the first year in a while weve had no top 100 player playing here.

Great to see how Eden has pushed up a level this year, with a pleasing consistency of performance. For whatever reasons she had too many sort of plateau years following her early real promise. But sometimes it can just come together at a later time. Has she had particular coaching changes? Anyway long may it continue.

She's looking good for continuing to rise up the rankings with her points already banked for this year. Beth less so in the short term with much fewer points this year, having of course had that time out, but longer term she too can push forward if she stays fit and healthy.

I didn't watch the match, just saw the score tick over (very erratically on the WTA/ATP app). Swan battled back into contention in both sets, and the overall stats suggest it was a fairly close match. It was quite a tough ask, drawing Vekic in Q1. Is that it now, before Wimbledon, or will Swan get another match in before then?

Probably should have gone to Ilkley instead. A QWC for Eastbourne perhaps?

Yes, I did wonder if the last minute switch to Birmingham was the best move, though I'm sure it was all thought through. Possibly there'll be a good grass court training block arranged this week, with other Brits, and maybe the chance to practise with some of the other players on site, too. It's the big serve that some of the higher ranked players have, that takes some getting used to, and Ilkley may not have provided that experience. It would be good if a chance to play at Eastbourne arose. The emphasis though, has to be arriving fit to play, and being competitive, at Wimbledon. Ranking points not that important right now imho.

It was as far back as 2007. We've been spoilt since then. The only player in the 2007 draw  and still active today in Angie Kerber.

Might Riske pull out having reached the final in Nottingham?

Yeah, she might be tired after Nottingham but if it's a good surface for her then surely it's a Riske worth taking wink

She took that week off last year, played Nottingham, Eastbourne and Wimbledon so I would not be surprised to see her WD

Coco takes the first 6-3 against Eden, winning 100% of first serve points (and serving at 72%). Eden had a great service game herself, and in rallies she can live with Coco, but it's not often getting into rallies.

Eden somehow forces a second set tiebreak - serving at 5-6, she served three doubles, saved 4 match points and finally got over the line.

Coco takes the TB 7-4. Another really good fight from Eden; her returns on the second serve were particularly good in parts, going really deep to Coco's feet (that's how she broke in the second set). But Coco is a cut above still. Was surprised to see Eden standing on the baseline to return the first serve; perhaps this was to force a riskier serve, but I'm not sure.
