Boys & Girls: U14 Category 1 All England Junior International, Roehampton, grass (Week 23)

This is the inaugural under 14 category 1 grass court event.  The only British seeds are Arabella Loftus (7) and Sophie Bekker (8).  Other names likely to be familiar include Mark Ceban, Liam Channon and Georgiana Mititelu ( played Les Petits As) along with Hollie Smart (last year's National under 12 champion).  You can see the draws here

Five British boys progressed through to the last 16, most notably Mark Ceban who edged out the American second seed in a final set tiebreak. Ten British girls are through, headlined by Mika Stojsavljevic beating the second seed and Isabelle Britton winning against the Spanish 4th seed

It's only a passing comment, I'm not trying to draw great truths from it, but I note that in our top girls, five of them who've made it through to round two have East European family names.

 It's pretty unusual how many prominent junior players are from 1st/2nd generation immigrant families compared to other sports.

It was the turn of Liam to edge a third set tiebreak against a seed today. Apart from the points and prestige of winning the inaugural event at stake here the two finalists will gain places at the new Wimbledon Under 14 championships.  If they are Europeans they will be the only Europeans in the event apparently, with places distributed to the other continental regions.

Note the appearance in the quarters of the French girl who CD has noted as having possible British heritage. Regarding CD's observation on family names it is interesting that it is only the girls where that applies.  Even though there is seemingly more encouragement for girls to take up tennis than boys in Eastern Europe nevertheless 12 of the top 20 boys in the Tennis Europe under 14 rankings are from that area, so not far short of the 15 girls

Just to confirm re Scarlette Hetherington, and based on an interview she gave:

Her father in British, her mother is Australian and Scarlette was born and raised in France.

She has a British passport, but also has a French one and an Australian one (lucky girl), and has chosen to play for France.

Her older brother, Jaydon, who is a pretty decent player too (but not of her ilk), and also was born and lives in France, has chosen to play for Australia

Liam, Mark, Mika and Isabelle already are into Wimbledon as they were the finalists at the grass court grade 1 last week which had the same prize!

No probs! Sadly my child didnt make it through beyond last 16 but competed well and has a major height disadvantage so maybe one day when they grow!

Also if you want someone who knows these kids fairly well to opine, without mentioning my child. at 14u growth and development is a major factor. in the girls my tip for the future is shamiso ndoro but again hasnt grown so isnt getting the results yet.
Liam channon is well built but not massive and really has the game I feel to develop and progress especially on clay.
