Not the best of performances, but got there in the end. Some great points mixed with some really bad shots. Anyway, 12 points from last year covered, and on to the next round.
Yes, I liked Beth's application. She knew she wasn't playing that well, especially at first, and the other girl was very 'tidy' - it was good to see Beth really buckling down and trying to play herself in. As people say, that's the 12 points covered, and also $2000 banked, which is a nice.
Fantastic turnaround from Eden from 1-4 in the second to win the tiebreak 7-1. The set point she won was a blinder as well.
Hopefully this will put an end to the negativity; she certainly has every chance to win.
Eden was 2-5 down in the second, really rather out of it, and suddenly her shots are going in, a bit more on her toes, the American can't serve it out - repeatedly - and we're back on serve, into a tb, and Eden waltzes through the TB and it's third set time...
Eden has done it again - levelled at 5-5 from 1-4 down. She has pulled some great passes out of the bag.
And Muhammad double faults to give Eden the win! Some really elegant tennis, working the angles and hitting deeply and accurately. A really pleasing result, setting up a tie with Beth for a main draw place :D
My big *however* is the mindset/open negativity. Muhammad twice threw away big leads, but you'd never have known it from her outward demeanour. I think Eden suffers from what I think of as 'toxic perfectionism', which is good in some jobs (surgeon, pharmacist), but terrible in others (teacher, sports person). It is totally absurd to be keeping up with someone way above you in the rankings and be looking stroppy when you net a return - *they* should be the one getting frustrated, because they're supposed to be winning! It just hands an advantage to your opponent totally unnecessarily. Maybe Liam can have a word
Asia was pretty poor but well done Eden for hanging in and taking her chances.
A year ago Beth and Eden sneaked into Nottingham as alternates, beating Em and Sam respectively (Beth made a dog's dinner of her match and ended up having to save a match point). Neither at that stage looked like their singles was going to click into place (Eden especially was performing well below the promise of years ago). Now they both look seriously capable of getting up into the top 275 and perhaps making it to New York for qualies. Fabulous.
