Lily went up a break, was pegged back, had a break point at 4-3*, saved some herself at *4-4, played superbly to get a set point at 6-5* but BHM finds 3 big serves.
Good effort Lily. I liked how she tried to keep taking the ball a little early and soak up the power, played nice tennis today. The power differential between them, aided by BHM's height, was very significant though, hadn't realised they were both the same age (26).
I agree, PaulM, there was some real clutch serving there from BHM - that serve on SP was a second serve, no? A real heavy, lefty, outswinger, very nicely placed......
Very similar to Jodie yesterday - Lily very, very close to forcing a third set, and putting up a very good show, given the rankings difference
If there any doubt, if I were the AELTC, that would confirm Lily's main draw wildcard for me - she really can play on grass. And although level is the most important, other considerations are not completely incosequential - Lily also has an attractive manner on court, is a new face to the British public, and a different ethnicity - it's all good and something to promote.
A little shout out for Rebecca Marino - it's quite a battle between her and Sakkari. It's also been quite a battle for her in general....
She was such a great young star at age 20
And then took EIGHT years away from tennis due to severe depression and other mental health issues
Even went and worked in her parents' construction firm, manual labour, pouring cement and digging foundations, before enrolling at the University of British Columbia to study English literature. Did a lot of rowing (she's a tall woman) and also coached tennis. And finally decided, after her dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, that she didn't want to have any regrets and wanted to give it another go......
Yes Harriet! Giorgi was a mess in the tiebreak, spraying the ball everywhere but Harriet did so well to get into that position given what was happening at *4-5, and stayed solid as a rock.
Absolutely brilliant. i love Harriet she seems a really nice person and I've always remembered Jay not partnering her in the mixed and playing with Coco instead. I do hope he's apologised for that. Not sure how he's doing in his match right now but really felt it was Harriet's time to have some good luck.
