I suspect she was probably carrying a minor niggle prior to the tournament, but with her being the big star name pushing ticket sales and TV coverage, there may have been pressure for her to just turn up and play from powers above her.
Emma does seem fragile, even more so than Laura Robson who was the new sensation of British tennis for a few years before succumbing to injuries. Emma had success last year after several lower level tournaments and qualifying tournaments. That gave her plenty of time to build her body up to the take the strain of playing higher ranked players. I suspected last year that the high ranking resulting from the US Open might hold her tennis back for a year and that does seem to be the case. If she drops down the rankings after the US open she can build back next year at a more natural rate, allowing her body to adjust to the demands of top level tennis. I don't know who she has in her team but a really good fitness coach might help.
Amazing Lily. Had to save 5(?) break points at the start of the decider then raced away with it. I'd be looking for any of our girls in main draw contention to be beating someone like Frech, so fantastic she got it done. Big achievement.
Lily! Lovely win. Great forehand from the patches I saw. The second set she was a little passive but there's potential there to go higher in the rankings.
Boulter in full UE mode. Some really hideous misses to get broken. Maria isn't doing anything particular impressive, Katie definitely has the better game.... let's hope she can find it today!

Yep, some slice practice needed I think. But she could definitely feel her way into this - she has the right tactic, she's just not executing the basics right now.
My own feeling was that it was tactics that were the problem.
She came forward a couple of times, to good effect, but seemed to get slightly confused then as to whether she should be coming forward more, and it was that indecision that caused the UEs.
Maria just putting the ball in, waiting for a Katie error. Some decent hitting from Katie in the 2nd half of the set but lots of sloppy errors too. Doesn't help that she's not getting many 1st serves in!
Re doubles - looking through the entry lists, I dont see Tara and Emina in any events, nor is Tara in any singles as far as I can see - is she injured?
Emina is in the qualifying list for Ilkley singles, but not Tara. There aren't any advance entries for doubles showing in the ITF site, so we'll have to wait and see if Tara is fit.
