Week 22 - ITF W100 - Surbiton, GB Grass

Talia, on the other hand, played well, and it wasn't that easy against Neel, who mixed it up, came in, sliced some nasty short ones that Talia doesn't like. And was very close to getting the second set.
But Talia ended up winning in two

Lulu Sun tried SO hard to give the win to Emily App

But Emily turned down a 4-1 lead in the first set, playing some horrid tennis.

And then played really well to take the second (Lulu was surprised she was still there, I reckon)

And had two MPs in the MTB, but couldn't take either.....

No idea who's coaching Emily, and the whole Sky thingy, and whether it's doubles only or not.

But she has a decent serve and a very good arm - and about the laziest footwork known to mankind - why has no coach done anything about it???

Yep a real shame; Sun looked very unhappy indeed to be on the grass. Emily looks so tentative compared to how she was playing a year ago in the pro league (easier players I know, but it's like she's lost that aggression and intent).

She is also resorting a fair bit to that curse of the under-confident player....the slice forehand.

I agree a decent coach could get her into a good position. Wish her all the best in it.

Emily W-S has a chance at qualifying, her Q2 opponent is only ranked 27 places above her. A good crowd cheering her on could be enough to make the difference.

Surbiton qualies is always fairly weak at the lower end because you get half a dozen girls being withdrawn at sign in because they are still in the French. Feels a bit more noticeable this year because of the two byes I think.

I was sitting next to Nick Cavaday who seemed to be her coach. He was very calm but encouraging especially at points when she was up against it. Good to see.

Both Jeremy Bates and Anne Keothavong were watching Isabelle.

Saw Ian Baites and Anne Keothavong watching Talias match which was on directly after Isabelle too. Good to see LTA staff at this event as very few and far between at the 25ks

 biggrin

Well, it would be funny if it wasn't so serious.....no

(Haven't got much time for Anne either)

Nick Cavaday is the chief coach at the Loughborough Academy, isn't he?

Seems to be doing a very good job

Freya won, with a really horrible first set and the whole match wasn't much better (well, Freya's tennis was horrible, Jess played her game, at her level, and there was some nice moments).

Eden also won.

Indeed. I found myself in the unusual position of supporting a German over a Yorkshirewoman in that match. After all her injury problems, I would love to see Ms. Lisiki have a good grass court season.

EWS' opponent is listed as ambidextrous and with a preferred surface of 'sand', which is a combination I have never seen before!
