Week 22 - ITF W100 - Surbiton, GB Grass

No doubt these pairs will all still be rewarded with more wildcards and prize money over the grass...!

As the addict was saying earlier, the 2 extra ranking points Lissey has now earned (50 for the SF compared to her 11th counter of 48) seem to have now squeezed her into the live top 100 at 99, with no further threat apparent to her being top 100 on Monday.

Sam is now 2 wins from squeezing ahead of Tara as GB #1 and projected WR 81.

In fairness, I doubt we'd have seen this flurry if the rain hadn't pushed the schedule back. They need to be more willing to say 'lets do the first round of doubs indoors' if they want players to stick around. You could do the whole doubs tournament in Tue-Fri if it was better planned.

All these withdrawals give doubles a bad name, there should be some penalty if players withdraw for no apparent reason such as points or money withheld. Or some deterrent at least .

Brengle retures early in the 3rd set vs Rodionova in their singles QF. So Jodie is off and running, *0-1

 I don't agree

The withdrawals are largely because all the timing and schedules have been messed up with the rain

The crowd will still get their matches (coz the matches that aren't played were due for days when it was raining when they wouldn't/couldn't watch anyhow)

And doubles rankings are pretty much a load of nonsense anyway (hence why singles ranking count instead for Grand Slams) and it's not going to have a big enough impact of rankings anyway, as very few events are on grass and that weather susceptible.

So I have no problem with it.....

I have no problem with it either but probably for a different reason. I see them both as different sports, maybe you should only be allowed to play doubles if you retire from being an active singles players. But then again double edged sword because the profile would be even lower. Truth is the majority of most avid tennis fans have little interest so its not really a surprise the players feel the same.

My view - if there is prizeMoney and the players have entered and thus taken up a space, they have an obligation to see it through , tk the organisers , to other players and to the fans that might be interested in the event

They lift all be tenuous obligations (not many fans, organisers dont really care etc - I dont know) but there we go.

And it all helps propel us towards the view that doubles doesnt matter - self fulfilling prophecy.

I accept doubles will always be the poor cousin but I think overall it deserves more than being an event for old singles players who cant cut the mustard.

But I realise I am in a big minority !

You are an overly-sensitive soul who focuses on the negative, my dear Jon - we've agreed on tons of things smile

I have no issues at all with players withdrawing to prioritise singles the following week. I have a problem with those players being given doubles wildcards into those subsequent events just because they are part of LTA set ups or otherwise 'in favour'. If you want to use doubles as a bit of half serious extra practice that's fine by me, but to then take slots in the WTAs over players who are committed to doubles just strikes me as off.

And CD is right, doubles rankings are really all over the shop, another reason why I find the LTA approach to Wimbledon wildcards annoying (just let Ali/Emily for example have one ffs!).

Jodie creating chances then not playing them well. Had 5 break points at 2-4* and another at 3-5*

3-6 0-1*

Jodie is playing pretty well - she was a little unlucky not to manage to take any of the break points she had near the end of that first set.

ADD: that's a fair point about the doubles wildcards, PaulM
