It is ludicrous that they cover so few courts at Surbiton. Only covered Centre and Court 1, so the rest will take an age to dry as its now raining pretty hard. Beth had just started on Court 7, so that will take a while to dry out as it isnt covered. Ive been in between Courts 1 and 2 since 11am, watching Nakashima on 1 and (started later), Sonay and Lily on 2. That is also uncovered, I think. Sonay started slowly at the start of both sets. Annie K and Bates (hmmm hopefully not with a view to coaching!) were watching that match. Rain passing over now so hopefully heading to Centre soon to see Eden.
Rain has stopped but no play until 2.15
Was watching Sonay/Lily as well. Lily started well in both sets but faded away and allowed Sonay to get the upper hand. Probably wont see the end of this as will head to centre for the restart and see Eden followed by the mens matches (I need to sit down!)
Agreed, surely you would expect rain so have covers ready. I think some matches will either have to move indoors later, or if moved to tomorrows schedule, winners will need to play multiple matches. Not forgetting doubles is yet to get underway apart from the one first round match being played later (Bains/Christie vs Daley/Maloney).
Is there a set time they need to stop play or is there outdoor lighting.
Beth's resistance breaks. But so encouraging she's playing at this level already after coming back. She'd definitely be top 275 if she hadn't had the heart issue, and could have taken out quite a few higher ranked players on today's showing.
5-7 *0-0
Coco has gone from.45% first serves in in the first set to 80% in the third. As JB says it's making it very hard for Eden now.
Unfortunately most of the grass court clubs are not set up for large tournaments and only have covers for their main courts.
Covers are expensive and quite labour Intensive.
However, I'm not sure why they cannot borrow the extra covers from neighbouring clubs..
I've seen the same issues at Didsbury and Ilkley
Eden goes down 4-6 in the end. Good composure in the last set, and she stayed with Coco in the (relatively rare) rallies; it was really just that first serve that made the difference.
