Boys & Girls: J5 Wrexham, GB - hard (Week 21)

The first round of qualis has been completed.

All foreign interlopers have been beaten biggrin

(one Indian girl has a BYE through to QR2 but we can't hold that against her

There are very few top-1000 players taking part, as befitting a J5, so great to see a lot of lower ranked, and younger players, having their chance

Final round of qualis has finished.

Main draw out

Great to see so many names I've never heard of, including the vast majority of the wildcards, with one wildcard in the boys having been given to 'Liam'

Do like brevity

You occasionally see a competitor with no name at all, but just a Christian name is an unusual error. The oop reveals it is Liam Channon, who qualified at Les Petits As earlier in the year.

The boys event looks quite strong and includes some players from the MWP and national academy  such as Joe M, Max C and Kai L with Ben Hudson as seed 1. The girls is very different with none of the more well known players taking part. Looking at entry lists a few are doing the Brit tour at Oxford next week so seems are getting ready for grass season with two grade ones coming up next month, presumably they keep their status of grade 1s with ranking points given the Wimbledon scenario?

Most likely the two grade 1s will be downgraded next month. There has to be an equivalent graded tournament taking place elsewhere in order for them to keep the current grade, which is not the case.

Agreed. That was my assumption as well.

similar for the wheelchair events although no Russians play the wheelchair tour so it would be a massive shot in their own foot to do that!

Sorry for my lack of knowledge here but do you mean that the J1 at Notts, say, can only be a J1 if there's another J1 going on somewhere else in world at the same time?

And that there was planned to be (hence Notts was a J1)? But now the other event (wherever it was) has been cancelled (for some reason) and so Notts can't be a J1 any more?

I don't think I've understood this right.....

The ITF have said

"ITF ranking points will only be retained in UK-based LTA tournaments in ITF World Tennis Tour, Juniors, Wheelchair and Seniors international tours if satisfactory alternative equivalent opportunities exist in other countries."

People have assumed they mean at the same time, and as there are no other J1s in the weeks of Nottingham and Roehampton that they will be downgraded. But it is unclear if that is what the ITF meant. There are plenty of other J1s during the ranking year that present an equivalent ranking opportunity.

Thanks, Lambda, I hadn't realised this was a special, 2022 Wimbly controversy ruling. Which makes more sense.... although not complete sense....

However, I guess that if Junior Wimbledon has no points, then the whole point of the J1s, as lead-up events, is rather blown.

Exactly , it isnt clear yet, but my assumption was as you have written it, Lambda.

I also assumed, therefore , that the Wheelchair events at Queens/Birmingham, and then at Nottingham after Wimbledon might be hit and sanctioned with no points, as they are all at a higher level than other events those weeks; again it isnt clear. Sorry, this is commented in the Junior section, but the shame there is that no Russians play the Wheelchair tour and , thus, any sanctioning of wheelchair points is solely going to harm the players in relatively big money and big points events. I hope on that one, some sense is seen although no doubt Wimbledon Wheelchair will get hit.

Where there are a lot of Russians playing is the Beach Tour, but of course they dont have a Wimbledon on the beach so that is going to be all nice and dandy (and Britain doesnt have any beach tennis pros as far as I can tell - it is largely Italians, Brazilians , and then Russians!)

In the boys today at Wrexham, we have four foreign lads through to R2, and 8 GB, of course.

Young Charlie Ruffell got a very good win over the 4th seed.

Five foreign girls left in.

In the boys, 14 year-old Alfie King puts out the 7th seed from Spain

Ilias Worthington also beats last year's U14 champion, and LTA fave, Joe Mazingham.

Only 1 foreign player left in the last 8

I might go down and take a look at this tourney later in the week. Are there any up and coming starts that would be good to watch out for?

THe girls did well today - Erin Pearce beat the second seed, and only one foreign player left

Not too sure which day you're going, Helen - Ben Hudson and Mason Dace are doing well but they're 17 and there's not much interest in a 17 year-old in a J5, IMO

If Max Carrier is still in, I'd go and watch him. The others aren't too known to me.

For the girls, I'd be quite interested in watching Eloise Newberry, and Allegra KD

Isabelle Briton is also only 13 (but probably will lose tomorrow)

And Erin Pearce (as above) had a good tournament the other week too, and is a new name to me, so I'd be curious to put a game to a name
