Week 21 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay)

10th seed Muguruza out as well now, and another defeat where she was up a set and a break. This time to Kanepi, so not really a surprise, very close at the bookies, and Kanepi is always a dangerous floater in the slams, but it really has been such a poor start to the year for Garbine, even considering her injury around Miami time, and she's 37th in the live race, which will of course drop further in the next 2 weeks.

She was playing a bit better today, and an unlucky opening match, but that WTA Finals win at the back end of 2021 is looking more and more like an outlier.

Trevisan had a surprise run here to the quarters in the October 2020 edition. Struggled a little to back it up but is going for a title in Rabat. Think Harriet will find it a tricky one (would have rather she drew a seed here and a lower ranked player at Wimbledon than the other way round!).

Elsa is a bit of a banana skin given Heather's up and down performances. I think Noskova could cause Emma some issues.

Trevisan has had an easy win in  Rabat. If Emma could manage a win she would become the only active British woman to have won  a singles match at all 4 Slams. In the 21st century. Only the late Elena Baltacha and Jo Konta have won a singles match at all 4 Slams in the 21st century..

Wow that's a very interesting if slightly depressing stat. Does that improve much if you go back another 20 years?

I think all three women face tricky ties but I'm going to be optimistic and say that  at least one will win though I'm not certain which one. Depends if Emma is really fit or whether her back will still be an issue. If pushed I'm going against the bookies probably and say I think heather has the best chance.

Emma should really be winning her first round match . Unless her back plays up then theres really no excuse , her opponent whilst last years junior champion has hardly been making waves since then.

I cant see Dart winning against Trevisan who has come back to form and Heathers form is poor and she could easily lose her match although Im going to hope that we get to see her on one of her good days .

So Raducanu and Watson to get through .

Sadly not much better in the past. Prior to Elena it was Clare Wood who completed all 4 in 1994 and as with Elena and Jo it was winning a round in the French to complete the quartet. We are then going back to Monique Javer in 1993 and Sara Gomer in 1987. The one before that was Jo Durie in 1982. Apart from Monique it was the French win that completed the feat for the others. Of course the 2 Jo's reached the quarter finals or better  in all the Grand Slams.

Harriet struggling *0-3

She did really well to save a couple of break points but couldn't escape the game.

The amount of work Harriet has to do to win a point is astounding. She's not actually playing badly (she's not spraying errors) she is just being outcrafted by someone who knows how to play proper clay court tennis and can't manoeuvre her out of position to create the spaces she needs to get the winner. Had a game point to avoid the bagel but can't take it.

0-6 0-0*

I'm a bit at a loss as to what Harriet can do here to get a game. Games are going 4-5mins even without multiple deuces. It's just brutal and she can't find a way through Trevisan who is having a lot of fun.

An hour to get to 0-6 0-2* is mad.

Yeah, it's safe to say she's struggled a fair bit since breaking the top 100. Emma (Nott'm R1) was her only win on grass last year so she's just dropping those 16 points, and the 10 from Wimbledon of course, plus she has a few low counters she can replace, so hopefully an opportunity to head back towards the top 100.

0-6 *0-3.

Loses 6-0 6-2. Had a game point in the final game.

One of those matches that was bizarrely both more competitive and exactly as one sided as the scoreline. Harriet did throw a lot at it, and probably deserved a couple more games. Trevisan did have to work quite hard (the points and games were often long) but she never looked another other than a nailed on certainty to win. Just the far better clay court player.

Sad she didn't manage to get many games, but Trevisan is a player who I love to see doing well (maybe not at the expense of a Brit).

Hoping Harriet can turn things around on the grass, otherwise I fear that cracking the top 100 may do similar for her to what it did for Katie O'Brien....

And she did it - 19 year-old Diane Parry has just put out the defending champion and second seed !

Just listen to the crowd
