RE: Week 21 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay)

At the moment there are only 2 players left  in the womens  singles  last 16 who have won a Slam singles in Swiatek and Stephens. Added to that just one runner up in Fernandez and could be two if Keys wins. It's a reflection that most of the recent winners /finalists do not look likely to reach another final.

Following on Keys reached the last 16. The women in the last 16  have a total of 5 Grand Slam finals between them with Stephens the most with 2.

A lot of young players now making a big mark too.

Obviously Iga, age 20, is just SO strong at the moment. She's playing Zheng, age 19.

Leylah is only 19 too, and playing Anismova, age 20.

And Coco (having just graduated from High School) is also having a really good tournament, aged just 18.

On the other end of the scale, there's barely a player over 30. Begu's the only one, I think, age 31. A really young batch overall.

In terms of countries, the USA have five in the last 16, which is pretty impressive. Russia and Italy have two.

 Camila Giorgi is also 30.

Yes, but that's not OVER 30

The day you turn 30 does that not make you over 30?

Nah smile Coz the age thingy on WTA only gives age in round numbers - so you're either 30 or you're 31. So 31 is over 30 and 30 isn't.

(But I do see the argument the other way biggrin)

Yes, it's kind of semantics. And of course commonly we refer to anyone having had their 30th birthday but not yet 31 as simply aged 30.

Crucually here, m'lord, GAMEOVER herself simply describes Giorgi as 30, not as past her 30th birthday or 30 plus so many days.

And "30" is not greater than 30.

I find in favour of CD

Live rankings classify over 30 as 30 and 1 day. Similarly under 18 is 17 years 364 days type thing.

No problem with the under 18s, coz you're 17 (even if 17 and 364 days). And 17 is less than 18.

But 30 is not more than 30.

So I'm sticking to round numbers smile

Of course, we could try asking Giorgi if she's 'over 30' - let's draw straws for that job biggrin

Giorgi might answer the question but very unlikely in English. A player of few English words.

Leylah Fernández beat Amanda Anisomova in 3 sets to move into the QF.

I should have probably mentioned Leylah along with Amanda, Emma and Coco Gauff when talking about younger players it would be good to see continue to come through and perhaps fairly consistently challenge Swiatek in the future.. Coco is also into the QF after sweeping Mertens aside.

Bottom half QFs:
Trevisan vs (17) Fernandez
(18) Gauff vs Stephens

Dreadful quality so far in these two womens matches . Keys implodes and Giorgi does similar with her high risk game.

Keys has zero court craft and lacks mobility.

Hopefully the youngsters tomorrow can save whats turning into a dreadful tournament for the WTA.

Yes, the depth of ineptitude. Though pleased at least to see Kasatkina through.

May the youngsters shine.
