Great win for Jeanjean, and Pliskova is now the 6th top 10 player out before the end of R2.
I was obviously watching the Badosa match and she survived a real scare against Juvan, down an early break in the decider, before eventually turning it around - Juvan made the final last week in Strasbourg and I think the matches caught up with her as she was feeling her back towards the end, so a big scare averted, and a little fortunate.
Absolutely, thanks so much again CD. We were all much better informed than the commentators on her background. (I also had put a small bet on LOL)
You're right - the commentators didn't really know their stuff
AND they should learn how to say her name - it's not logical, as such, like a lot of names, but if you were using the English equivalents, it's pronounced Jan-John (SC would know how to do proper phonetics but Zhan-Zhon would be my best guess).
(NB would never in a million years recommend a bet, completely inappropriate, but very glad you made a penny or two - and, yes, having seen Pliskova's first match which was pretty hideous, and knowing Léolia's game, I also had a very nice flutter - and not 10p either )
And kept an eye on Badosa's match afterwards - as you say, Ace, was pretty close in the bits I saw, although the third set score seems nice enough
I see that despite losing in R1 here, with less points to defend than others, Annett Kontaveit is currently live ranked 2.
Paula is live ranked 3. Iga Swiatek could be really sailing yet further away as WR 1 if she has a very good French Open. As it is she will comfortably come out of the French Open still comfortably #1 even if she loses in R2.
She's only currently down for one grass court ranking event.
Where would she be ranked if all her points up to and including the US Open dropped off?
Well, Emma will be on 2975 ranking points after the French Open. 2434 of these counting points were earned up to and including the US Open last year.
If you purely took these points off her total and left everyone else's points the same she'd be down to about a 120 ranking ( probably look higher after Wimbledon with no-one due to earn points there this year so overall points will drop ).
Yes her points are very loaded but that would seem a bit of an extreme comparison to just take all these points off unreplaced as against the others' points as they stand??
Of much more interest I'd say is that OER is showing Emma as live 63 based on all players' points earned this year. She has earned 438 points in 2022 so far and I imagine ( well sure hope so! ) lots more to come, particularly on North American hard courts.
Interesting. Before we knew Wimbledon points were coming off I had thought that if Emma could end the year top 32 and be seeded for the Aussie Open it would have been a very good year indeed. Thats looking less likely now. As Andy Murray found recently, winning one or two matches in tournaments does not build the ranking much. I like Emma a lot and of course she has years on her side but though there are many, many positives to take out of her first year so far there is that nagging feeling that there should have been a couple of better highlights.
Grass pre Wimbledon and then the Autumn tournaments are both good opportunities for Emma to climb. For the pre US Open points, just a defence of them may not be too bad, any improvement a big plus. The actual US Open is just damage limitation as far as defending points goes
I'd certainly still back Emma to be top 32 in the rankings by year end.
Still plenty to play for and even now it isn't as if she is that much out of it on points so far this year.
As I said, for points purely from this year, Emma is live #63 on 438 points. Live #32 is currently just over 200 points ahead, on 643 points. Relatively little extra to find with so much of the year to go.

Thanks for the info CD, it's lovely to see real talent coming through without the federation's backing. I wonder whether the FFT will try and reown her now...

Yeah, Juvan hit a DF by inches on what would have been a second serve ace at 1-0 40-30 and that would have been 2-0, and 11 games from the last 15, and would have felt a long way back given the way the match was going, but thankfully (for me), it was fairly comfortable after getting the immediate break back.
This Swiatek run is crazy, she's already 6-0 2-0 up on Riske who has only won 10 points. She obviously always had potential, and a former grand slam champ, but this absolute dominance seems to have kind of come from nowhere. She didn't have the best back end to 2021, but at the moment, she's far more dominant than even Barty ever was (although still just that 2020 French Open in terms of slams).
A total of 20 players have reached at least one QF in the previous 3 Slams. Includes 4 who have managed it twice and none in all three QFs. I wonder how many new ones there will be this time.
