Wimbledon Wildcards

Think we normally end up with a discussion on who the WCs will end up going to, only 5 weeks from qualifying starting. Normally someone has a good grass season and muscles in. Thought I'd share my current view of the situation.
Can't remember how many WCs are given out but the French has 8 MD and 9 Qualifying.

MD

Draper

Broady

Clarke

Peniston(?)

Jubb(?)

Gray(?)

QD

Jubb(?) - If not main draw, might not need qwc as would probably be DA

Gray(?) - If not main draw

Mchugh

Harris(?) - Might be overlooked as not 'young' and up and coming

Gill

Matusevich

Pinnington-Jones

Pow(U18 wc)

WC Play-off

Fury(?)

____
Outside chance

Broom

Parker

Ill just come back re main draw at this stage. I think
Its fairly easy right now.

Jack
Liam
Jay
Ryan
Paul
Surbiton winner
Nottingham winner
Ilkley winner

Assuming they stick with the policy of giving the trophy winners wildcards?

Where it gets difficult is if Jack makes it in directly, or Liam? In which case, Id agree with Ali as a back up or anyone else that does wonders this next few weeks - a challenger final or winning a round or two in an atp level event .

Ill think about qualies later !

For qualies its really tough - Id actually follow the Race in large part to reward those doing well this year:

Gray - yes

Mchugh yes

Harris - yes

Gill - yea

Matusevich - no

Pinnington-Jones - yes

Pow(U18 wc) - yes

WC Play-off - yes

Fery - no

Broom - yes (hes well up the race for British players)

Parker - no

If Anton, Arthur, Stuart and others like Dan Cox are in wild card play offs , they will be great this year!

There are wild cards for the two play-off finalists.

It has also always been a rule that the previous years junior champion receives a qWC.

Is that right?! forgot about both those rules. Who was last seasons junior champion, was it Will Jansen?

In which case Id really struggle who to give the Qwc to. Too many options. When are they decided, mid way through Ilkley? Id probably see who does well the next few weeks and make any decision right at the last minute to form players.

Its going to make the grass season fascinating , in terms of qualies and challengers , as well as the main events - to have so many options this year is a luxury !

Ah ok. Thats Samir Banerjee. American whos ranked 1900 in mens and seems to have been really struggling for form since winning last seasons Wimbledon.

Wimbledon traditionally awards home wcs and qwcs more based on the 12 month rankings ( or a bit more than 12 months for some as they still will be this year due to covid ) rather than up to date form, though up to date ( particularly grass ) form should arguably split close decisions if necessary. Plus some will no doubt be awarded to extremely promising younger players.

So if we assume Jack D makes the main draw and weve 3 challenger winners to include, the 5 men in ranking order would be Liam, Jay, Ryan, Paul and Ali G. Im not sure re Ali for main draw, has he shown he can play this level?

If we assume those 5 for main draw though then for qualies we have the 2 play off finalists, the junior Wimbledon champion, and the nationals under 18 champ (Luca Pow) leaving 4. Assuming Ali gets a main draw one, then by rank we have Aidan, Billy Felix and Anton. Charlie Broom would miss out. If Ali didnt get main draw, and got a qualies one, Id give Billy one over Anton. Its great rewarding the youngsters but sometimes effort needs rewarding also and Billy deserves that. But I still think grass form should be considered and Id leave it right to the end.

I'd definitely want to see Billy get one. Both the commitment to the tour and the great strides he's made over the last couple of years make him very deserving. Although I like Anton, it seems a shame for Charlie as he seems to be in better form atm. Hopefully early grass court form will sort it out.

I think the reason I put Anton down as well as Arthur is because they both made it through to FQR last year, more that than recent results.

Personally I'd give Billy an MDWC, but I accept I might be slightly biased on that one. biggrinbiggrin
