Week 18 - ITF W25 - Nottingham, GB Hard

Excellent win for Emma.

And that's two through to the MD (one of which was guaranteed, admittedly)

R1: CHRISTIE, Freya (GBR) 586 (CH=286 2016) v MARCINKEVICA, Diana (1) 289 (CH=196 2014)
They met in 2015 and 2016 with Diana winning on both occasions.
R1: KARTAL, Sonay (GBR) (8) 371 (CH=370 2022) v CONWAY, Jasmine (GBR) WC 845 =CH {17yo JCH=80}
R1: SILVA, Eden (GBR) 445 (CH=408 2021) v MALONEY, Eliz (GBR) WC 632 (CH=631 2022)
R1: XU, Mingge (GBR) WC UNR =CH {14yo JCH=143} v NEWBERRY, Lois (GBR) WC UNR=CH {15yo JCH=1051}
R1: BAINS, Naiktha (GBR) (6) 340 (CH=199 2020) v WILSON, Emma (GBR) Q 1297 =CH
R1: LUMSDEN, Maia (GBR) 582 (CH=250 2019) v WONG, Hong Yi Cody (HKG) Q 540 =CH
R1: GILLAN, Alice (GBR) Q 840 (CH=685 2019) v LAO, Danielle (USA) (2) 303 (CH=152 2019)

Well, we will get at least four through to R2.

Well, Lois was the unexpected wildcard here. Which means Marni is - presumably ? - injured (or something's going on) as she'd at least have been in qualis

As Peter says, looking on the bright side, getting at least four through is not bad - but SO many all GB clashes is not great (Eden v Eliz seems particularly unfortunate, Emma may well give Naiktha a run for her money, the two youngsters is sort of a 'free' point, but Sonay v Jasmine is a shame too)

Yeah, the odd all GB match is fine, especially if they were lower ranked / inexperienced, like Mimi vs Lois as CD says, but 4 is crazy, ha. Never heard of Lois, like ever, so no idea if that is an effective bye for Mimi, or if it could be an actual intriguing match.

I'd probably fancy Emma to beat Naiktha on current form, even if Naiktha has largely been operating against higher ranked players this year - I'd be very interested to see the odds when they come out.

She withdrew on 1st, with that long string of letters that I was told off for quoting last time.  smile

It was said in commentary at the UKPL that Marni was "managing" a glute strain.

 Quite sure its an effective bye for Mimi, Lois is 2007 but way off the level of Mimi or Hephzibah. Shame the two play one another first round. Theres some tougher first round for our other GB  players. Im surprised Lois got a maindraw WC even a QWC would have come as a bit of a surprise.

Lois appears to have won 5 three-setters (all against Baltic opposition) in the last week to win a J5 in Tallinn. Surprised she's not worn out!

With her 6 points from qualifying and reaching MD R2 at the Loughborough W25 at the end of January already on the board, a R1 win here for Mimi over Lois would give Mimi a WTA ranking.

The other player that was due to play and was in Nottingham, was Maia Lumsden, so must have been a very late withdrawal.
I'm guessing Jasmine was also very late and the LTA were running around looking to give away the final wildcard. Probably after qualifying started, hence Lois appearing.

I've seen Lois play several times at G5. She has a very good return of serve and a decent game, but G4/G5 is probably her level and we have seen what has happened to the other G4/G5 juniors in qualifiers.

I'll await confirmation from someone more expert than me, but I assume as Ilkley is a much higher ranked event that Mimi should be able to use her wildcard there as well.

 I'm not sure what you mean as Maia is in the draw, as is Jasmine, against Sonay.

Apologies - for Jasmine read Marni.
I swear I read through the draw several times and didn't see Maia...

Shame that Eden's points for winning in Nottingham haven't gone on yet. She would have been seeded. Feels like she won ages ago!
