Emma is 4th on court tomorrow. The schedule is surprisingly early for Spain with no evening matches and Emma estimated as being on court around 3.45 pm local time. Im used to Spanish events playing much later than this appears to being scheduling
Emma started very poorly, tons of backhand errors, eventually got broken for 2-4* having saved 5 bps that game, twice Martincova had set point only to make an error, giving Raducanu the chance to break. Having had very few longer rallies in the early part of the match, almost every point became a lengthy rally. 5 errors to start the tiebreak, then a couple of winners from Emma to go up 5-2, more good play from her to take it 7-3.
Tereza gifted Emma an early break in the 2nd set with 4 unforced errors in a row, then another with more errors. Emma started taking on forehand drive volleys immediately after a good serve. Raducanu needed a good first serve to save a bp at *4-0. The last game looked like Martincova wanted to get off court as quickly as possible. Emma taking selfies with most of the crowd and signing endless tennis balls, reminded me of her early rounds at the US Open.
Felt like Emma found the right formula to win this match against an opponent whose level dropped alarmingly as the match went on. There were patches of good clay court tennis from her once she adjusted to the conditions.
