Week 15 - ITF W60 Bellinzona, Switzerland Clay

Emily App was playing OK-ish, a bit sluggish from the back of the court, but serving well

Got to a tie-break and then had a shocker

Two double-faults

Twice she came into the net but SO slowly (en chaussettes, as a French coach would say) that she had no chance

And basically gave it to the other girl

I always feel when I watch Emily that she is really *trying* to be calm - she walks very slowly between points etc. I get the idea behind that, but I think some positive energy and pumping herself up is very much needed too.

Yes.... good point ...... I remember her as a 15 year-old being really dynamic, and springy, and enjoying herself - but all that has rather  disappeared ..... there are some half-decent bits, that's for sure, but I agree, she really could do with a bit/a lot more energy

Yep, and I don't think it's a fitness thing - she moves fine when she needs to, it's just not a proactive approach. I think understandably she is probably very low on confidence, which obviously eats into positivity. But she has a bit of a self-saboteur thing going on (e.g. going for the difficult cross-court smash just now on break point, instead of letting it bounce and playing it safe).

A bit like Kyle...he was a bit too contained on court

Yes, but with him, at least, (a) he had real power, and (b) he was always like that

Whereas with Emily, she was quite different (in my memory) as a younger teenager, and really needs that energy

SHe definitely plays better when fired up. Remember how she was playing in the UK Pro league last year ?

Sadly another loss today.

Chance of some decent points in what looks like a weak draw. (80, 48, 29, 15 and 1 for turning up !)

L16:- Elsa Jacquemot (FRA) / Natalija Stevanovic (SRB) CR673 (442+231) v Emily Appleton (GBR) / Ali Collins (GBR) CR613 (280+333)

Emily and Ali are struggling. They have lost the first set in a tiebreak 6-7(6) and are a break down in the secons 2-3
