Week 13 - ITF W60 - Pretoria, South Africa Hard

Not at all surprisingly (I had big money - for me - on this one), Glushko has thrashed Carole Monnet (who beat Jodie yesterday) :(

Lily won 6-3 6-0. Not sure if Tessah gave up towards the end, but that's a fine looking score line. Plays the aforementioned Glushko in the SF.

She should be heading back toward the early 230's.

Actually, make that 220's - OER only had her updated for L16 points, so plenty more to add. Closing in on GB #6.

Didn't see the match.

As said, Tessah is Jodie squared so if she blew herself up, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

But whatever, really well done to Lily.

Wow, 'Jodie squared' must be quite a number.

As for a possible replacement BJK player, if Lily is now eligible surely she would seem the logical pick before Jodie. What's she like on clay?

Yeah, it's still a really notable win for her. I believe her career 5th best win by ranking, and one of those was via retirement at one set all. Plus Tessah had won 17 of her 21 matches this season, so consistency there, at a career high of 152, and Lily was the 13/8 or 2.63 outsider.

Would be fab if she could go a step or two further yet this week. It could also really shake things up for the likes of Nottingham / Birmingham / W100s etc. biggrin

I've only ever seen her play on grass - so the exact opposite to clay, really biggrin

But she has a tidy game, bends her legs well, no idea, but I would have thought she'd be pretty decent on clay.

And Jodie's game is really not suited to clay at all (on top of the other issues......)

In 2021 Lily played 25 of her 75 matches on clay, with a 15/10 win loss. (According to her ITF profile). Some were at W60 and W100 level, so she has some experience, unlike Jodie who has just a 3/6 career record with the three wins back in 2017.

Lily has the first set, 6-3

Just got broken at the start of the second, but there were 4 breaks in the first set - not a biggie....

Go, Lily !

Argh, Lily got it back to 4-3*, and had multiple break points to serve for the match, including the first which she would love back from a second serve, but Glushko held, broke, and fended off another 2 BPs when serving for it herself, and it's now into a decider. 6-3 4-6 *0-0.

Looks windy.

*3-5 in the decider.

It went 0-2 to 3-3, but momentum back with the Israeli. Despite all the breaks, the opponent has come up with some big serves at important times, including 2 in a row at 40-15* in the last game to set up a big hold.

And now broken from *30-0, so Lily loses 6-3 4-6 3-6. A shame as it was a winnable match, and she was in a decent position in that second set, but still a profitable week for her with an important few months ahead.

Bit of a missed opportunity perhaps after taking out the top seed.

Lily finally listed as British on Google notifications.

Lily, Jodie and Katie all at a rugby game - as per Jodie's Instagram. First time rugby game for Katie and Lily.
