Week 13 - ITF W60 - Pretoria, South Africa Hard

Truly awful

Although I laughed out loud on the match point when Carole, instead of moving up on the second serve, and then scuttling all the way back as the ball is tossed up, actually stayed right back, off screen, and completely sucked Jodie into the double fault.

A really poor end to the third set and, yes, no surprise that the third set would end up like that, or that she'd collapse after the first

It's a shame, I tuned in at 3-5 and thought she was going to do it when looking half threatening at 5-5*, but not to be, and I guess that awful DF is fairly typical.

Not ideal though, she's got 100 points coming off over the next 2 months, that's almost a third of her points tally, and she could find herself fairly low down the grass pecking order if she enters that period in the late 200's, as opposed to the early 200's she currently finds herself, which does seem too high IMO - I've said it before, she may be in and around a career high, but her stock feels so much lower than it did this time 3 years ago, and picking up 8 points here and there isn't going to improve things quickly.

Edit - 5-5*, not 5-6*

66 points drop on 11th April. Of course a couple of small counters to go back on but around 50 points likely to drop unless she plays and wins next week. Not sure where that would drop her ranking to.

A missed opportunity here in quite a weak field to pick up some points. Same for Katie though I guess she may be injured again. Does anyone have any news on this?

Is she still with JTC. looked at their site and the Men seem to be doing well but if their site is up to date then some questions need to be asked about their set up for women. It's a roll call of women failing to progress.

In Jodie's last 14 matches that have gone 3 sets, stretching back to May last year, she has lost 13 of them, 12 of these after winning the first set. The one 3 setter she did win she lost the first set.

That is surely way beyond coincidence. It's pretty awful. And as I think has been said before most of these matches looked on the face of it very winnable

If Katie isn't fit enough for Prague presumably it will be between Jodie and Lily for her place in the squad. I suspect Anne would go for Jodie although Lily is in better form.

Yes. I've harped on about this before.

And from first-hand experience (sort of) too.

The results speak for themselves.

But you could see it too - even 4 or 5 years ago, when Colin Beecher and Lucie Ahl were at Surbiton, coaching Jodie, it was utterly ridiculous -  they put up with a completely over the top amount of am-dram nonsense on the court, basically pandered to it. Jodie was out of control. And (unlike certain players) it had a completely negative effect on her.

And it wasn't just once. I saw it probably half a dozen times during the grass court seasons over a couple of years.

Any self-respecting coach would have walked off and said 'sort yourself out, I've no interest in putting up with this cr*p'.

And, to be honest, it wasn't much different with Freya at the time.

And, to round it off, Freya, Jodie and Ryan Storrie all suffered from real mobility and dynamism problems - they were basically 'allowed' to be lazy. And, again, nothing got any better, year in year out.

Now certain other players that are/were on their list are better (no one could accuse Heather of being lazy with her footwork) but some of their players are US college ones (Ali, Ryan P, Lloyd etc) so it's not quite the same picture - whereas Jodie, Freya and Ryan S were pretty much pure JTC at the time, and going onwards.

Heather left JTC when Courtney moved north. She uses Bolton a lot now I think.

I think it's just too 'comfy' a set-up. Or at least that's how it's struck me from the outside, which might be unfair. But a lot of the women in particular seem to have done better since they left...

That is an horrific stat. I'm fairly new here but you can see that whilst Jodie has a powerful game, mentally she is weak and her movement can be poor. Others have mentioned possible issues that should have been stamped out by trainers when she was younger. I fear it may well be too late which is a shame as She's one of the players I follow the most.

If I wanted someone to play for my life then Lily would be near to the top of my list. Jodie would be right at the bottom!

It is a 25K next week so Jodie can't add anything more to her 11 April ranking. She'll fall to around 250, probably just outside (OER have her live ranked for 11 April at 267 but that is wrong as they haven't replaced the 2 counters that are dropping).

She will have to make gains over the next 2 weeks if she wants to make Roland Garros qualifying. She was ranked 240 last year for qualifying entry and scraped in as a last minute alt after the draw was made.

Great start for Lily, *4-1, but just the one hold in the match thus far.
