Week 12 - WTA1000 - Miami, USA Hard

Yeah Bencic is the only seed in this quarter now. Not sure I can see Heather coming through it but hope she keeps playing a bit better and can make Belinda really work for it.

Of course had Emma taken advantage of this draw the usual suspects (not on here) would just be pointing to it being another 'fluke' run with the draw breaking down.

She's going to lose more matches than she wins this year, but it will come good eventually.

Wonder if the retirement of Barty and the resulting possibility of seizing the no. 1 ranking in the near future is causing extra pressure and having an impact?

Or the fact that other than Barty, there is nonstandout and everyone can beat anyone on their day.

The wind has been pretty horrendous and is often an equalizer, esp against the big hitters. I imagine that's had a little impact.

Heather and Belinda met in Indian Wells in 2014 with Heather winning 5 & 4.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like this the past 2 days, it's extraordinary even by WTA standards. Sakkari (4) lost to Haddad Maia early, Ostapenko out at her first stage again, Vondrousova adding to the withdrawal list, and plenty of other seeds tumbling as well.

Badosa just about sneaked over the line in her match with Bouzkova after getting pegged back from 5-1 to 5-5 in the second set, so the #1 race is still live for now. Iga currently leads 5-2* in her match with Golubic, and I'd like to see her win today and wrap up that slot as I think it's deserved. Badosa will already be a new career high of #3 in the next rankings following the seed exodus, but I think #1 is too early at this stage, and she probably wouldn't be prepared for it, so an Iga win here, a Badosa title, and #2 in the next rankings would be my ideal scenario. If Carlsberg did...

Swiatek won 6-2 6-0. First set was more competitive than it looked, but she ran away with the second.

New world #1, and the first ever world #1 from Poland. She's been very good thus far this year, so it's well deserved.

Extraordinary indeed even to me who regulatly points to that lack of consistency

Of the 32 seeds, 4 withdrew, 17 lost their first match and only 11 are through.

The top half has only 3 seeds through a round !!! - (8) Jabeur, (9) Collins and (22) Bencic.

It would surely really help the WTA find a more compelling narrative ( rather than a series of seemingly unconnected short stories ) if such as Swiatek and Badosa could become real leaders and focal points.

Heather has missed 7 break points. Id say she's properly missed 3, the others well saved.

*2-2

Siniakova has had to retire, exhausted after her match with Emma

Gets the break on a double, then doubles on game point. Back on serve.

4-3*

She's hitting some beauties on the backhand side.

Bencic has woken up. Smacking the ball around now. Heather fallen back to pushing the second serve and being punished.

4-5*
