How many first or second round exits before we have to grudgingly concede that the US Open may have been a one-off?
Let's hope not, still plenty of time.
But if it does end up that way, it's not a bad one-off to have on your cv!
Agreed it is far to soon to say but I do think there are some concerning things. Some of her losses have been terrible. The losses to Rybakina and Kostyuk, especially devastating. But even tonight, losing to a player who has barely won two singles matches in a row for the best part of a year is poor. Also she's had chances to win but not taken them.
I have to say, too , that she seems quite physically fragile. She's young, not played that many games but is picking up injuries and knocks quite easily. But Then Andy Murray was a bit that way early in his career and he turned out ok.
It isn't a bad one off to have but if your career is essentially just that you become a trivial answer in a pub quiz rather than being remembered as a great player. Still plenty of time and years to find out though.
Wonder how long it will be before she changes coach again.
Just looking at the rankings , if we took off Emmas us open win and replaced it with say a third round at the same event, her points would drop her to around 75 or so. Which feels about right , dont you think? And we would certainly be happy with her being 75 now, if looking at it from 12 months ago, very happy.
Lets cut her a lot of slack and see where the season goes.
Meanwhile , Andy next - and he worries me a lot more !
At least Heather won. Svitolina is obviously vulnerable right now, and not just because of Ukraine (she's lost 10 of her last 15 since early Oct, 3 of them to sub 100 players, and 2 of her 5 wins were post invasion), but it's a fine run from out of nowhere, and it would be great if she could get back in, and remain in, the top 100 for a bit longer yet, just as it was looking like she might have an extended period outside. It would also be fab if both Harriet and Heather could free up Wimbledon MDWCs.
Looking at the live race, there's only actually 9 places and 40 points between the 2 players (Hev and Elina).
That whole section Emma was in has totally fallen apart too.
I was waiting until the end of the Pliskova match, but yes, indeed - one of Siniakova, Saville/Tan, Kalinskaya, or Bronzetti are going to be in the QF, and one of the latter two in the L16 which would be amazing for them given they are a Q and LL respectively.
I mean, once the draw was made and the seeds placed, it wasn't a huge surprise considering Pliskova is still very early in her comeback, Emma is 4-8 since the US Open and her current ranking seems too high, Giorgi withdrew from Indian Wells, and Halep was visibly impaired towards the back end of her semi final with Iga last week, but a hell of an opportunity for some, and a missed opportunity for others.

Another loss from a winning position made even worse by the draw opening up so much that Emma had a great chance to get to at least the quarters .
After last years US Open many thought she could rack up some decent ranking points with so few points to have to defend until the summer and with kind draws due to the luxury of being seeded .
As it is the longer this poor run goes on for the more pressure will build and the questions will increase as to whether her US Open was a fluke .
She does show flashes of brilliance even in her losses but mentally blowing 3 winning positions in a row will do little for her confidence .
Looking forward to these US Open points to come off. Hopefully she will still be top 75 or so, and can play the 250s and build confidence the right way. Whilst shes been losing these matches from winning positions, youd hope it would at some point just switch, and two wins on the trot doesnt seem thaaaat far away
Emma just needs to get rid of the niggles and build up her fitness. Don't forget, over the last few years, she has not played a lot of tennis.
She also needs quicker courts.
Miami is horribly slow

I personally continue to think that Emma will prove herself to be the real deal.
She got some breaks at the US Open but still won a lot of matches against top 50 players. It was no mirage, she did that from such a shallow base.
She's in a bit of a state of flux just now, not helped by some illness and injury issues, but mainly just on the rebound from the extraordinary events of past autumn. I did think this year was going to very unpredictable as to how she followed on.
I wish she was playing better and winning more but I 'm not hugely concerned for the longer term and I simply don't anywhere near share some folk's pessimism. She should come again, probably better than before. Too much talent not to
Great win for Heather. Always thought she had a chance as Svitolina is really terrible right now.
As for Emma I'm sorry but that is yet another disappointing result to add to all the other ones since the US open which is starting to look like a different world right now.
Really hope she pulls out of the BJK Cup as she's clearly struggling for fitness again. She just seems to lack the mental strength to see out matches from a winning position. Winning the US Open is obviously a massive plus but right now I'd say it is holding back her development and forcing to play tournaments and players above what her current level of play is. At this stage in her career without that US open win she would probably be playing ITF60s and 80s not WTA 1000s.

Providing she's fit better to play the BJK Cup where she can have the experience of two clay court matches with zero expectation rather than go cold into a very strong field in Stuttgart.
It's frustrating seeing her repeatedly failing to close out matches from winning positions but she's too good a player not to overcome this given time and experience.
