Week 12 - WTA1000 - Miami, USA Hard

Harriet finally holds.

1-1*

The issue with Maria is Harriet won't have a lot of pace to play with. She'll have to generate more of her own rather than counterpunch and redirect. Which is tricky for her.

Yeah Harriet can't do anything with these balls she's getting, and is becoming increasingly frustrated.

1-5*

Misses a break point in a very long game.

This is just a really bad match up for Harriet unfortunately. She can't work out what to do and doesn't have the power to hit through Maria.

*1-3

What a shame for Harriet.

Disappointing but I'm not hugely surprised after such a big week. Another learning curve, how to consolidate performances.

I'd agree that I think it was more a match-up problem than a follow-up problem.

time for some rest; hopefully it can mean she's fully prepped for Marbella and the clay. I think it's scheduled for Miami week 2, so can still add points to this period.

I'd say Emma has by far the toughest draw there. Siniakova won't be easy and right now, on current form, can't see her beating Halep. Would be very interesting if Harriet was the qualifier Siniakova faces.

Heather has a really good shot at getting through two rounds. Rus is absolutely the epitome of an average career player, most of whose points come from the ITF circuit. Svitolina is basically a walking bye most of the time. One match at a time but if Heather can't beat Rus then not sure where she will pick up points before the grass season.

Shame Harriet has to qualify but she should really beat Maria whose best days are a way behind her now. Not sure who Harriet would play in the final qualifier but if she wants to establish herself in the top 100 then these are the matches she needs to win.

If Harriet beats Maria she would play either Trevisan or Yue Yuan

This was academic because Maria won.

Yes very much my view from what I saw. Frustrating as I don't think she'd have had trouble with a lot of other options there and would have fancied her in the final round. Qualifier slots are also much more friendly here than IW. But oh well.

Harriet is in the main draw for Bogota and very close to a seeding. So not sure if she will do Marbella. But it's a long fortnight to hand around over the Atlantic now so schedule may well change.

Yes - from what I saw Harriet looked bamboozled by Maria - tried coming forwards a lot but then backed off at the key moment - she was going round in circles really....

Petra Martic who beat Emma at Indian Wells last week , lost in the 1st round of qualifying as well.

If Heather could beat Rus she would play Svitolina . Svitolina is not at her best these days.  As far as qualifying is concerned there are on paper some useful players here. That includes Harriet, Martic, Juvan,Claire Liu, Yastremska, Kalinskaya ,Qiang Wang, Bouzkova. This is a more impressive list than some of the players in the main draw. .  Heather might be glad she is not in qualfying.

I think I put  a curse on the qualifiers as the first 3 names on the list  Harriet, Martic and Juvan all lost in the 1st round of qualifying.
