Bencic has woken up. Smacking the ball around now. Heather fallen back to pushing the second serve and being punished.

This is pretty poor now. Bencic playing better and there's a major gulf between them.

4-6 1-4*

Heather looked good at *4-2. Hitting well, moving well, being aggressive, Bencic looked ready to explode. The double at *40-30 just turned the whole match in the end.

Good week though.

Thanks Paul for the updates.

Yes, good week for Heather but very disappointing if she lost much of her game after one DF, however important a point it was at that time.

Only 8 women's matches today, but 2 further walkovers. LL Bronzetti beats a fellow LL in R2, gets a walkover in R3 today (Kalinskaya), and now faces a W/C in the L16. Crazy.

Muchova also withdrew, so Osaka advances, and plays either Li or Riske in the L16. Crazy, crazy top half.

Somehow out of the early carnage a decent looking QF line-up has emerged.

Bencic vs Saville
Osaka vs Collins
Badosa vs Pegula
Kvitova vs Swiatek

Swiatek, Badosa and Collins seem to have shown form through the AO, IW, Miami events, relatively at least!

I was thinking the exact same Indy, possibly the best line up on paper that it could have been following the Thursday and Friday madness. All the favourites came through last night, bar Kudermetova, who was a very narrow favourite vs Kvitova, but the latter is certainly the bigger name, and probably makes the line up look better.

Badosa one win off #2, but I think if she played anyone else from the round of 16 other than say Bronzetti she may have crashed out. Naomi Broady must have mentioned at least 5 times that she didn't expect her to finish the match against young Linda Fruh (who will be good), but she came through, and does now have a day off before her match with Pegula. I'm surprised there was no talk on here the other day about the Fruhvirtova-Azarenka situation.

I'm looking forward to Osaka vs Collins - hopefully the day stadium matches aren't marathons so that the evening session can start at 12am, like it did last night, as that's just about manageable for me. Interesting match - Collins has indeed had a great start to the season, the only completed match she has lost is Barty in the AO final, but this is only her third event of the season, and she retired in a winning position in R1 in her only other tournament, and she does seem to have a few medical issues that prevent her from playing a bigger schedule, but she's very good when she's on.

Well, while they looked decent enough on paper, it's fair to say the QFs have been damp squibs thus far.

Saville probably was overmatched vs Bencic, especially after this was her 11th match of the Sunshine Double, but she lost 1 and 2 in just over an hour. I didn't see the Collins-Osaka match after all as I'm currently loaded with Covid, but that was 2 and 1 to Osaka in exactly an hour, and while Osaka seemingly served great, apparently Collins was having issues with her neck, and not long ago, Badosa retired at 1-4 to Pegula, so there hasn't even been a combined 2 hours 30 mins in the 3 QFs - I was saying that Paula wasn't looking great the other day, had a MTO at 2-1 to get her blood pressure taken, and generally looked very unwell, but was quite lucky with her draw, but obviously whatever was bothering her then didn't clear, and she was never in the match today, losing 16 of the last 19 points.

Hopefully Swiatek vs Kvitova somewhat delivers tonight.

By my reckoning, Vondorusova, Halep, Giorgi, and Muguruza all withdrew before the tournament, Muchova and Kalinskaya gave walkovers mid event, Garcia, Badosa, Kalinina, Tauson, Galfi, Azarenka, Zanevska, and Siniakova all retired in the main draw, as well as Juvan and Yastremska in qualifying. That's a crazy amount.

I wonder what Billie Jean King is making of this lot.

Sinner also retires during the first set....not good for the fans at all.

Jannik Sinner also retired in his QF at 1-4, so those who had tickets for day session today would have only had 10 games, and no completed sets, in their two singles matches. Not ideal.

Harriet slips back out of live top 100, down to 101.

It appears that Harriet may still be WR 100 on 655 points

live-tennis have Harriet as 101 assuming Vera Zvonoreva's 95 Miami points replace a Doha 1000 one point, leaving her on 664 points, which is what I would have initially thought.

But OER have Vera having to keep that ona point and instead dropping 15 points from Angers 125. That may be linked to WTA 1000 commitments but I don't really know. That would leave her on 650 points and behind Harriet.

Anyway we will find out soon enough.
