Week 37 - Davis Cup Finals 2022 (group stage partly in Glasgow 14-18th September)

From the Davis Cup website

The International Tennis Federation and Kosmos Tennis have confirmed the four cities selected to host the group stage of the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals on 14-18 September as Bologna (Italy), Glasgow (Great Britain), Hamburg (Germany) and Malaga (Spain).

The ITF also confirmed that the Davis Cup Finals Steering Committee has chosen Canada as the replacement wild card to complete the 16 nations taking part in the Finals.

Canada joins 2021 finalist Croatia, losing semi-finalist Serbia, wild card Great Britain, plus the 12 nations that recorded victories in the recent 2022 Qualifiers: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Korea Republic, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and USA.

The draw for the group stage of the Davis Cup Rakuten Finals will take place in London on Thursday 31 March at 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) and will be streamed live on the Davis Cup YouTube channel.

The group stage of the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals will be held in September for the first time. This latest innovation, following discussion with the player group, will further help reduce pressure on playing schedules, and will see each city host one group of four teams.

The top two teams in each group will progress to the knock-out stage of the Davis Cup Finals to be held in the one, yet-to-be-announced location from 23-27 November.

Edited to add the week number, as suggested by Jon.

Breaking: The LTA announces that Glasgow is one of the hosts of the Davis Cup group stages in September. The Scottish city joins Bologna, Hamburg and Malaga.

Means that Britain will host two significant tennis events in consecutive weekends in September. The Davis Cup at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow from September 14-18 (starts three days after the US Open final) and the Laver Cup at The O2 in London from September 23-25.

Clarification to a previous tweet: The successful Davis Cup hosting bid will last for five years on the basis that Britain qualifies or receives a wild card for the finals in each of those years. After Glasgow in 2022, other cities will be given an opportunity by the LTA to host.

Thats great news and the five year thing is very big - a nice follow on from the Tour Finals. My daughter is handily placed for a visit from me around that time now!

if it is a 5 year deal, does that mean we get a place each year regardless of how we do the previous year? Or could it be hosted here and we might not in fact qualify?

Still, the 4 venue idea is better than it was with a single venue, I liked it last season and the gap before the finals works well. Maybe not what it was, but better.

It if moves around it would be nice to see it go to Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds maybe, as future venues. Leeds First Direct was built with hosting tennis in mind, but never has done - it holds 15,000 capacity, maybe 12k for tennis

Does this scupper the chances of hosting the BJK Cup finals as well this year?

Notice Glasgow, Bologna and Malaga are all indoor venues selected, Hamburg is the famous Rothenbaum. Which nowadays has a retractable roof, but remains a clay venue. Glasgow and Bologna will be indoor hardcourt venues, Malaga may be clay court laid, not clear at this stage.

the pots (and seeds) are out

GB are in Pot 2 - as Spain are also a host, we will be entertaining one of Croatia, France or USA as a top seed

So, Abu Dhabi has been canned and the new host for the finals will be Malaga, in November

www.tennismajors.com/others-news/malaga-to-host-davis-cup-finals-in-november-in-2022-and-2023-595740.html

Apparently, Malaga will no longer host one of the 4 groups qualifiers (Glasgow, Hamburg and Bologna still do) and a new group host is being selected.

So, presuming that GB play in Glasgow, if we qualify it is off to Malaga in November - not sure if that one is a good venue for Bob to get to ?

The other group stage venue will be one of the other 13 countries not hosting already and will be announced prior to the group draw which is taking place on 26th April

www.daviscup.com/en/news/325950.aspx

GB will automatically be in Glasgow as the host. Top 2 of the 4 teams in the group will progress to Malaga finals

All venues will be indoor hardcourt - Hamburg will be transformed from the usual clay.

Thanks FW, presumably indoors as well (Valencia had an ATP 250/500 event indoors a few years ago), which means Spain will host the group and the final stages as well.

Forgot draw was today, will make sure I follow that!

Thats a good draw from an attractiveness perspective and a winnability perspective.

USA - clearly a strong all round team and although they dont have big star names, they are known names and should have decent support in the UK

Kazakhstan - got some good players and proven they can compete at world level

Netherlands - probably the weakest team but close neighbours geographically of ours and will bring fans over to create some atmosphere.

Expect Britain to be in the top 2 with USA but will be close between those 2.
