R1: KARTAL, Sonay (GBR) Q 392 =CH v OZGEN, Pemra (TUR) WC 325 (CH=182 2019)

Pemra must have played most of our players over the years, now 35 years old.

I reckon that as good a draw as we could have hoped for.

Doubles - rematch of last week's SF

L16:- Freya Christie (GBR) / Akvile Parazinskaite (LTU) CR831 (363+442) v Funa Kozaki (JPN) / Naho Sato (JPN) CR759 (256+503)

Some revenge for last week, and for Freya in singles, as they win 6-2 3-6 10-4

Caught the last few points. She was broken serving for it at *5-3, but broke back straightaway to win 6-0 6-4.

It feels really stingy to come through 3 rounds of Qs to get like 1 point, especially having a top 300 opponent in the FQR (who would usually be a seed in most W25 main draws), but that's another very good win for her, and lets see where she lands in the very tough main draw.

There's at least 4 players in the main draw who were top 100 within the last year or two, and another if Wang Yafan comes through her FQR as well. They really could have done with more events this week. 10 players in the top 210 in crazy!

Well done Sonay.

Hopefully this win and the potential it shows will be noted by the LTA when it comes to funding - or do they go entirely on ranking and age?

This must be the first time she has lost a set for ages.

So often Sonay makes winning look desperately easy, but what I love most is her ability to find a way to win in very close matches where there is little to choose between the two players. Congratulations on another fine result.

Well done Sonay! Really good to see her pull through against a much more experienced opponent and get some decent points.

She has been winning in three on occasions. She is on some unbeaten run at the moment. Back to back titles plus this week as well.

Must be closing in on a record for unbeaten matches.

I wonder what happened in the latter part of the 2nd, winning just 1 point in 15 to go from 4-2 15-0* to 4-5 *0-30

Sonay was not the only q to win here. Sonmez, Wang, Khirin, Shneider and Anshbe won as well as a wc.

Didn't she beat Talia in three sets in Birmingham?
