Looks like Zverev will be there after receiving a 8 week ban but having it suspended for 12 months.

Appalling, if I was an umpire I'd be refusing to umpire his matches

Shocking. Very poor decision. How can nearly hitting an umpire be a suspended ban and recreational drugs be a one year suspension?

Because 'recreactional' drugs are illegal and for good reasons, that's why.

I am sort of guessing hitting an umpire is illegal as well, under the realms of assault...Although maybe nearly hitting an umpire is nearly illegal?

Common law battery - intentional infliction of force
Common law assault - intentional causing someone to apprehend imminent force

If he actually hit his shoes, it's the first
If he just missed, it's the second
Crime

Also civil offences too - umpire can sue for the same. (Wouldn't get much in damages but would still win)

Consent, in sports context, wouldn't apply- imo

Threatening behaviour (behaviour intended to harass, cause alarm or distress) is also illegal, and also for good reasons.

I'm not sure you'd get him for that. It requires clear intent, no? As opposed to recklessness, like some. And he would certainly argue that it was in anger but not with direct intent to actually cause alarm. Good argument the other way too, of course.

But common law assault is clear. There is no argument against at all.

Possibly. It alarmed me though, and I think the umpire looked pretty harassed, if not threatened as he left the court extremely quickly! But I imagine the burden of proof is pretty high for a criminal conviction, so I expect you're right.

Anyway, he was lucky to get away with a suspended ban in any case in my view, probably coloured by the pictures of his ex-girlfriend!

And OConnell ran Andy v close in the Middle East recently. Would be great if Liam can win.

Cam, Dan and Andy have reasonable draws.
