Tom Hill has really made it as a coach with Maria Sakkari. There was an article in the Telegraph about Tom and Andrew who had been coaching Elina Svitolina with success that they would become much sought after coaches. As I was once told you can be an effective coach without being a great player. Fred Perry was no good as a coach. Of course Maria has been on the rise in the last 12 months with 2 Grand Slam semi finals.
Maria Sakkari has an English coach in Tom Hill. Her only WTA title is when she beat Jo in Rabat in 2019 and Tom was her coach then.
Wow, just that one WTA title ever and she will is up to live ranked 3 and will be WR 2 if she wins the title here ( the final winner will be the new WR 2 ).
of course her 2 Slam SFs last year have boosted her points which are then enough in the general state of flux and lack of consistency from the very top players other than from Ash Barty when she plays.

She also has 2 other tour finals (WTA500's at St Petersburg and Ostrava)and 3 semi-finals (WTA500 Moscow, WTA1000 Miami and WTA1000 Doha) amongst her counters, so her consistency is earning her points

Pretty consistent loser then when it comrs to the sharp end of big tournaments.

Yes, you could say that. Kontaveit twice in finals, Emma and Krejickova in slams. Retired in Doha.
Maria Sakkari did have a match point in the semi finals of the French last year against Krejcikova. She does have an English coach in Tom Hill who she has been with for at least 3 years so not chopping and changing coaches all the time. Of course her one WTA title was against Jo on clay. Jo beat her on every other occasion they met. Apart from Rabat she has 1 singles title in her career at the $25,000 level and 5 at $10k level. But in the last couple of years on her day capable of beating the best. Has a 3-1 winning record over Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek kind of ran away with that final. A wind affected match, and lots of breaks early on, and you didn't really know which way the first set was going to go right up until the end, but Iga won 6-4 6-1 in 1 hr 20. Sakkari's wait for a second WTA title goes on, but Iga has had a fantastic start to the year, and is now more than 1,300 points clear of third place (Sakkari) in the race.
A lot of what I was going to say has already been discussed. You have to feel a bit sorry for Maria, almost 3 years without a title is crazy, but she is at least making finals now, rather than constantly falling at the SF hurdle, and I'm pretty sure she grab one or two this year, but while she is proving she is one of the top 3 or 4 players at many events, it does sound so strange that she'll be #3 in the world, coming up to 27 y/o, but has the same WTA title history as the likes of Olga Danilovic, Astra Sharma, and even less titles than Hibino and Peterson.
I prefer Sakkari to Swiatek, but I was wanting the Pole to win for race / ranking reasons.
