If I'd had to choose which one out of the three Brits who played in the singles yesterday won, I'd have picked Harriet due to the rankings significance. Well done and let's hope she can stay there and keep it going!
A great result for Harriet. What are the odds on her being GB number 1 at the end of the year?
That will probably be more about Emma than her. But be great if she can consolidate in the top 100. And she is showing a level that I didn't foresee that can move her up that top 100.
Worth remembering that Harriet is 'famous' in GB tennis circles for saying (and we believe her) that she is practically always in bed by 9 pm, that she doesn't drink alcohol (except a mouthful of champagne on special occasions) etc etc
Her dedication is second to none.
And, yes, with the fans above, it's great to see how she's come on - and, as an aside, as one of my 500-200-100 bets at age 16/17 or so, and having been a mega fan since Surbiton 2015, it'll also be a very big kerching moment in a week's time, so ta, Harriet NB Didn't go for top 20 though - but wouldn't that be grand ?

Lovely background info on Harriet. Sounds like she absolutely deserves her success. You have to admire that kind of dedication.

I actually think Harriet has way more to her game than Emma. They're a similar build but Emma does manage to generate more power so if Harriet can work out a way to do the same there is no reason why she can't match Emma ranking wise.

Several of the other girls have had sudden surges of form, racing up the rankings and then stagnating or even falling back through injury or loss of form, while Harriet seems to just keep moving steadily up the table. It's a case of who wins in the long run, the Tortoise or the Hare?
I'm not sure I agree with that. Harriet's ranking has been pretty stagnant in the mid to low 100s for 3 years.
That said , covid impacted most of 2020 and some of 2021 in terms of tennis , so that may explain her plateauing?
Except while that is indeed a fair part of these recent years we are talking over 3 years from early 2019 as Lambda's graph clearly shows.
Harriet steadily rose up toto WR 121 on 11/02/19. In the last official rankings she was WR 122 on 07/03/22 with a CH 120 from 08/11/21.
It simply hasn't been a steady year on year rise, it's rising up before plateaueing for an extended period.
I think that plateauing has been discussed before on the forum with doubts expressed by some as to how far she could push on. It is great therefore to see what she has been producing here and certainly not lucking in but finding a very high level as such as Paula Badosa has commented on.
But anyway the past journey is much less important than where she heads in the future.
