Week 10/11 - WTA 1000 BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells, California, USA (Hard)

What a win for Harriet (again!)

She's up to 99 live now. Normally that wouldn't make it certain yet at all but while I might have missed something, I can't see anyone who can catch her with points from one of this week's ITFs, she's the second lowest-ranked player left in Indian Wells (the only one below her Daria Saville) and as far I can tell, there's nothing above W25 level next week, which means no points earned at women's ITFs next week will be added on Monday week.

Well she's certainly now going to move onto 660 points ( at least! ) and both the live-tennis and OER sites have that as live ranked 99. No-one shows as being able to overtake her this week and apart from ITFs which should already be accounted for from this past week no further tournaments apart from IW can add next week and there is no-one lower ranked still in IW.

So all in all, it looks exceedingly like it !!

And Steven I see thinks the same !

Yes, except I just realised that Daria Saville (way below her) is still left, hence the edit. So Harriet should be certain of a place in the top 100 on Monday week by most people's definition but Daria could yet stop her getting into two figures and meeting the Tara Moore (R) definition of being in the top 100. wink

Ah I didn't look far enough down the rankings.

But WR 100 would certainly still be in the top 100

Fantastic win for Harriet. I thought she played really well from *2-5, winning plenty of the points through her own good play, rather than just relying on errors from Kaia, of which there were a lot, as well as tons of brutal winners. The Dart forehand was very impressive, brilliant movement around the court as usual. One sensational lob winner from Harriet in the 2nd set.

Must admit it has taken me far too long to appreciate Harriet's strengths as a player. She is just a ridiculously tough competitor; which I guess should be obvious from her track record of qualifying for Slams.

So pleased for, and proud of, Harriet. I thought she had a chance and she did so much right. Her movement and anticipation is just so good but I was thrilled to see how often she was being aggressive and trying to control the rallies.

Huge achievement.

Ditto to the above - that's great news !

And really deserved - such a hard worker, so dedicated.

Just shows that messing around in those ITF 60ks are a waste of time (Liv Horde is sitting there, going, but I beat her in two sets last week!)

This is lovely news to wake up to. I'm so please and proud of Harriet.

It looks like her opponent didn't play really well, but also didn't play really badly and it was Harriet's consistency that won through.

I didn't expect her to be the last woman standing, but am happy for her and the future on the women's side.

From the WTA Insider twitter feed:

Paula Badosa: "In WTA anything can happen. The level has improved a lot. Yesterday I was watching tennis. I saw an insane match. Then you see the ranking. It was a girl [ranked] 120. She played like Top 10 level.

The player in question?

Harriet Dart.
