Greatest Players of All Time - according to Tennis Abstract

>I wonder where Swiatek winning US Open and her third slam takes her in the top 128 list, if at all? Presumably outside still due to lack of longevity?

Short answer: Still outside. It's probably the most common question I've gotten this year (and understandably so), so I may write a little bit about it tomorrow, especially if Alcaraz wins as well.

No. 48 is Arthur Ashe. He was in my top 25 men.

One of my heroes, really, great man and player. To die at 49 was too young.

He wasnt in my top 50 overall but he surely deserved every creditable mention he got

I recall the Ashe v Connors 1975 Wimbledon final - masterclass
Of tactics. But didnt really know Ashe as a player as my tennis interest developed around 1977 properly, when I was 12. I recall Ashe more as a player for reaching the Masters final at Madison Square Garden in, I think, 1978 when he played McEnroe, a player with
Whom he always struggled when he was later Davis Cup captain. 2 people who were complete opposites, as personalities.

Arthur Ashes autobiography is worth reading, very good.

Arthur and Virginia Wade who won the singles at the first US Open 1968 were both born on 10th July.

Stunned that her peak ELO was 1993, 8 years before her best year. Shows how strong Graf and Seles were!

Yes Jen. Capriati was in my top 25 women. Grand Slam and Olympic champion. I remember the wonderful French final of 2001 when she beat  a very young  Kim Clijsters 12-10 in the final set. Sadly Kim never won that title. Similarly although Capriati won the Australian a couple of times she never got beyond the semis at Wimbledon or the US. She lost the 1991 US Semi final to Monica Seles 7-6 3rd set and her the same experience against Justine Henin 12 years later.  She lost the 1991 Wimbledon semi to Gabi Sabatini and lost to Justine Henin 10 years later at the semi final stage.

I can pretty much guarantee that #63 is not in your top 50! (probably not #62 either; I don't have a good feel on the conventional wisdom regarding #61) Then things get tight ... at least half of #51-60 could easily be rated higher, much higher in a couple of cases.

yep, the plan now is one next Tuesday, then hopefully back to three per week starting on the 9th.

Thanks Jeff, I wait with interest !

Wow, this was left field ! I can honestly say I have never, ever, heard of her!

Although I pride myself with the names of the past I have heard of, sadly I have never  heard of Ora Washington until now

I have just purchased the book "Suzanne " by Tom Humberstone . It is the life of Suzanne Lenglen presented in a way I have never seen a  biography  before. It is in comic strip style but the graphic art work is WOW! On page 182  when Suzanne is  turning pro she is asked if she  has  seen Ora Washington   play. Suzanne's response is  that Ora would have beaten Helen Wills and herself if she had been able to play against them. But she could only  play in tournaments against people of colour.
