Speaking for (at least) myself, I believe that there are readers of this thread that are just that, readers. Not having anything to say doesn't make us disinterested.
Cool and thats great - I didnt mean it to sound critical, just primarily to recommend it to people as a series to follow! Glad you are into it, Chris!
>Jeff Sackman- congrats , this Novotna write up is marvellous
Thanks Jon.
Glad that some of you are enjoying the series.
Also, thanks for the Arnaldi note. No idea how that happened. It's fixed now on his page; he'll still show up as [GBR] on some other players' pages until the next full update of the site on the Monday after the USO.
Jeff Sackman- congrats , this Novotna write up is marvellous , a real eulogy and well written. Well done.
Jana didnt get in my top 50. But as a person, shed be in my top 10 of tennis players for sure.
I had Jana in my big list but didn't have her in my top 25. I blame John Barrett's commentary for Jana losing it in the 3rd set in 1993. Jana along with Doris Hart is the only woman post WW2 to lose their first 2 Wimbledon singles finals and win the 3rd. She is also the last woman to win the singles at Eastbourne(1998) and go onto win Wimbledon the same year.

It would have been nice if hed swapped to represent GB, but not sure we actually need him right now!

Great facts , Gameover - where do you get these nuggets from?!

I think I've just been following tennis for a long time . Also aware of some of the facts of the top players from the printed word over the years.
There's a couple of other names who might feature. One is Neale Fraser who won Wimbledon in 1960 and also the US singles a couple of times. The other is Jana Novotna . If Andrea Jaegar gets in one would imagine Novotna should. Novotna is more famous for a match she lost(the 1993 Wimbledon final ) rather than when she won it.
I notice I made this suggestion a few days ago. Proved correct.

I knew there was an all German ladies final at Wimbledon in the 1930's but could not remember the players involved. It was the year Helen Wills Moody missed. I did not have either of these ladies in my list and they did not cross my mind either. Of course Germany had to wait over 50 years for the arrival of Steffi Graf.
Some may recall Ora Washington appearing at #64 in Tennis Abstracts list. I heard on Radio Five Live today that there is a special podcast about unsung sporting heroes of the ages and it was specifically advertising that the Ora Washington podcast is available to listen to on BBC Sounds
He was also in my list at #41, so pretty close to Jeff's ranking overall. A great singles and doubles player, I used to go with my parents to watch the Huddersfield Open tournament
(Edit - this still takes place it seems and Luke Johnson won the singles a few years back https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/other-sport/amateur-sport/sellers-international-huddersfield-open-tennis-5102287)
Newk by that time was retired but had started to run a tennis ranch/academy in Texas and he brought a squad of players with him to the event each year - this is late 70's, early 80's - he was a big name still then, his motif was his famous black moustache. He didnt play the events but he was around and knocking up with his youngsters and I got to see him a little - I was around 14 or so at the time.
