I have an associate here (once a friend I guess) who became very clearly a covid anti vaxxer, vehemently so. Very prevalent on twitter following the Lawrence Foxes of the world, going on marches, campaigning outside the school gates.

I challenged her on linkedin at one point and got blocked by her. Friendship sort of disintegrated.

Anyway, I still check her twitter now and then to amuse myself, outrage myself. I have noticed she is now full bore into being a Ukraine denier - or more to the point, accusing the media in the West of exaggerating what is happening out there. Looking further afield, I noticed there are lots of them out there and almost all of the Ukraine deniers (not saying there isnt a conflict, but v much saying a) it is a conflict not a way b) lots of old photos are being used to suggest more bombing etc is happening than is the case c) the west caused this d) Ukraines leaders are not good people e) Russia is making more headway than the Western press reports etc etc etc.

And a lot of the folks saying this about Ukraine are also the same people who are the anti vaxx brigade , covid denying gang.

Lawrence Fox appearing once again among many others.

I now believe my once friend is a quite scary person and feel for her husband and kids , who I still like.

PS she is also a very ardent evangelical Christian - I met them at Church, back in the day when I had a faith, sadly no more. But there also seems a link between a strand of evangelicals, right wing view points, freedom is our right types (more usually US folks) , and the anti vaxx and pro Russian community - who would ever have believed the American Right and Russia would find themselves aligned?!

Thats an interesting read John but plenty have commented on the Corbyn/Abbott old statements that have been made that seem to side with Putin. I think comments are being reversed but the point I am making is that I dont think there is a single "type" for this type of rhetoric. Completely bonkers-lost the plot people come in all shapes and sizes wink

Does anybody know if there is access to EU subsidies/charities that could help with housing Ukrainian refugees. I have possible access to a facility here in Spain where we may be able to house over 300 refugees, but we don't have the finance to do it.

The facility would offer accommodation, all meals and educational opportunities. Think along the lines of a UK boarding school facility but for families.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd ban them. It's too easy for them to be used as propaganda, safer to ban them and then no one is put in a difficult position. It's not entirely implausible that the Russian gymnast felt he had no choice but to change the insignia on his shirt to a pro war one. If he hadn't have been allowed to compete then there would've been either no propaganda or, alternatively no forced support. Better for all.

 Definitely - I also think, however, that those criticising the players for not speaking out are a little naive. I think Kostyuk said the " no war "rhetoric was not strong enough and the Russian players should come out against Putin - thing is, that is easier said than done; if they did do that, there would be a chance of reprisals against them or their families, I would certainly be concerned, and they could be charged or even stopped travelling with anti state comments. It would be ideal and helpful, clearly, if they are stronger in their condemnation, but realistically we can't expect them to be. 

However, we should definitely ban them from playing and as you say, better for all.
