Mto for Emma
Think she could we'll lose here which would be a very poor result considering her opponent has barely played for a long time

Daria has played several Aus tournaments this year so is clearly making her way back from surgery.

 Ok thanks for the info

A still disappointing outcome especially with Emma now potentially injured.

Hope she will be ok but wonder if she will withdraw from the next tournament.

This has not been a good week for British girls, none of them have yet won a match. It is now down to Katie S to win her 2nd round match after getting a bye in the 1st round.

Saville got cramp landing on a serve in the third game but still managed to win the game. She received treatment at the changeover while Emma was arguing with the umpire over the Challenge system not having the last point of the game she challenged. Roll forward a couple of games and Saville still suffering from cramp but Emma could hardly move. I thought it was fatigue as there was no sign of injury. Saville received more treatment at the changeover while Emma went off court for a MTO. Came back with some tape around her upper left thigh. Struggled to move through the next couple of games, although did manage to win a game. Got more strapping at the changeover. Played one point before retiring.

At 3hrs 36 this was the longest tour level match this year.

She's young. She's learning. But still, this one is a bit 'oh'.

Left hip injury cited as the official reason for the retirement according to WTA Insider on Twitter.

If everything went right for Emma in New York then she's had very little luck since.

I also wonder how much of what she achieved in New York can, in retrospect, be placed at the door of the mood and culture created by Andy Richardson. Something is clearly different and as ever it will be complicated but that must be true part of the jigsaw.

Emma hasn't had a run of tournaments or a run of matches ever since the US Open and I fear that might continue till the next US Open. If she loses early in the next US Open she will lose most of her ranking points and find herself back in WTA qualifiers and WTA125s. She may then get a lot more matches and be able to rebuild from there. It was wonderful that she was able to win the US Open but the points she acquired in that one tournament have been something of a curse to her long term career.

Doesn't winning a Grand Slam entitle a player to plenty of wild cards if needed? I am thinking of Andy  Murray and Venus Williams in particular.

It was a late match and a long match. I was disappointed when I saw it was to be an evening match and thought that was not ideal at all. The altitude was a factor also, affecting health and behaviour of ball (I understand) Her 1st matches in USA last year had somewhat extreme conditions and she struggled with them, as did all the players. I think the 2nd seed was also knocked out in the 1st round here, and had been tipped as likely winner.  Just hope the hip is not a significant injury.  Wise to  retire for sure.

I am much more optimistic and although I hoped for better I had expected almost anything in the short term from Emma. As it is she hasn't played much and overall much closer to WR 100 level (?) which is a bit of a drop off but hey from where she was a year ago ...

Short term, maybe this year into next, a bit problematic. Longer term she will come again. Whatever he brought to the party, it was Emma, not Andrew Richardson, that played and won all these matches for the US Open triumph. I think talent will out in the longer term and we will have a serial contender.

Hope it does show again fairly soon but no real drama for now, just continuing to adapt to last autumn's events.

As often the case a sensible assessment from Indie there. I think the over hype from some ( think Amazon ) after the open about defo world No 1 and multi grand slam winner was a bit ridiculous and not really helpful to Emma. Anyway, hope the injury is not too bad..... onwards and upwards to the next one folks.

May be overthinking it but I can't help wondering if all this stalker business has been a bit unsettling too. (Well, obviously it's been a bit unsettling - but more than that?) Thinking of having to move, to a gated community, not feeling safe, court cases, etc. etc. - it can't be easy, and such a big change in such a short time.

Talking about hype the Daily Telegraph  was one of the worst. After the US Open rarely a day went by without her being mentioned. The paper seems to have 2 tennis journalists these days.
