Well done to Sonay, a great watch and good skills on display. Jodie undeniably has a lot of talent but will underachieve unless she develops a coping strategy for when you make an error.
Jodie just can't keep the intensity going throughout a rally. She breaks down far quicker than she should. It was reasonably close but Sonay was pretty much well in control throughout. Apart from at the net, Sonay won on attack and defence.
Sonay plays 17 y/o Barbora Palicova in the final. The Czech did a Jodie and went a double break down in the second set before winning the last 6 games. 5 of them were at W15 level, and 4 in quals these past two weeks, but Talia is the only player to have beaten her in her last 15 matches, so that win looks even better now (even though Talia was a big 11/2 underdog heading into it at the time).
That win should take Sonay to around 472 in the rankings, a whisper above my end of year prediction in less than two months!! And into the low 400s if she wins tomorrow. That is seriously impressive.
I may have thought it better if Jodie won but I guess I can put up with yet another Sonay win And it looks to have been a good match.
Sonay has now earned 85 points so far this year. She will go to 105 if she wins the final and #1 Brit for points this year, ahead of Heather 103 and Katie B 96.

I didn't see every point but I think this part really sums up Jodie for me. She's capable of playing some decent stuff but not often enough and not for long enough. There just didn't seem to be any determination to try and really build a point. She'd play some good shots and then just spray the next one wide or long.
I really feel she needs to deal with her mental application throughout a match. She's got potential to be higher ranked but that won't come unless she addresses the mental side of her game better. Obviously she's still young with plenty of time to improve. But, sometimes you see a player and you think they have just got it. Right now I'm not seeing that with Jodie. I'm seeing a player who potentially has it but has a long way to go.
Close match so far - Kartal had an early break but has been pegged back. Palicova hits a heavy ball so Sonay having more success when she's disrupting rhythm a bit more.
It's a really competitive match, and a good watch thus far. I missed the first couple of games, so tuned in to see the young Czech win 3 games in a row, but it's a good battle and Sonay has regained her break. Palicova does hit a heavy ball. She's also not been too happy with some of the calls, especially an apparent ace (although she did get her second net cord in a row straight after)
Very fair crowd as well, although I guess Palicova largely being the aggressor helps there, plus her age too maybe.
Back level now at 4-4* - very hard to tell which way this set (and match) is going to go.
It's a shame they haven't got ball kids for the final. I think normally they get in juniors from the local club at the weekend which is good for the players and the kids
