2022 Wildcards

Wildcard rule from rule book:

Players who are not subject to the AER may receive during a calendar year a maximum number of

Wild Cards as follows:

$25,000-$100,000 Tournaments

a) Six (6) wild cards into singles at $25,000-$100,000 Tournaments on the Womens ITF World

Tennis Tour, with a maximum of three (3) of these allowed in the Main Draw. In addition to

these wild cards, a player who wins one (1) or more matches at a tournament where they

are allocated a Main Draw wild card will receive an additional Main Draw wild card for use in

the same calendar year (a Merited Increase). A player can receive up to 3 Merited

Increases each year at $25,000-$100,000 level (i.e. 6 Main Draw wild cards in total, in

addition to 3 Qualifying wild cards). For the purposes of determining the Merited Increases,

wins by retirement or default (after the match has started) count as wins, but byes and

walkovers do not; and

b) Six (6) wild cards into doubles tournaments at $25,000-$100,000 of the Womens ITF World

Tennis Tour

$15,000 Tournaments

a) Six (6) wild cards into singles at $15,000 Tournaments on the Womens ITF World Tennis

Tour, with a maximum of three (3) of these allowed in the Main Draw. In addition to these

wild cards, a player who wins one (1) or more matches at a tournament where they are

allocated a Main Draw wild card will receive an additional Main Draw wild card for use in the

same calendar year (a Merited Increase). A player is able to receive up to 3 Merited

Increases for Main Draw wild cards each year at $15,000 level (i.e. 6 Main Draw wild cards in

total, in addition to 3 Qualifying wild cards). For the purposes of determining the Merited

Increases, wins by retirement or default (after the match has started) count as wins, but

byes and walkovers do not; and

b) Six (6) wild cards into doubles at $15,000 Tournaments on the Womens ITF World Tennis

Tour

Each ITF tournament in which a player earns WTA ranking points counts towards a players

maximum number of ITF Tournaments under the Wild Card Rule. Singles wild cards are counted

separately from doubles wild cards, except for players under WTA Age Eligibility Rules. However,

participation in a Tournament in which a player does not earn ranking points does not count as a

tournament played under this Wild Card rule.

Well this is excellent, thank you for sharing. I think Mimi may also have a merited increase wildcard as she won her first round at Loughborough. Or does this not apply as shes so young ?

Mimi was a qWC in Loughborough. Only women with a main draw wild card can get the merited increase wild card. I think 14 and 15 yr olds can still get merited increases but as they are restricted to 3 wild cards between birthdays they couldn't use it until after their birthday and for those turning 15 it would need to replace one of the qWCs as they would still be limited to a maximum of 6 in a calendar year.

Out of interest are the wildcards the same for men in terms of process?

And do these rules above apply to WTA events as well eg could these players get additional wildcards in the grass season for example, or is this restrictive rule all encompassing ? Thanks for all the great info!

There are no limits for men at ITF level. At ATP level, they can get up to 5 where they would have been a direct entry and unlimited where they would not have been a direct entry.

The merited increases only apply to womens ITF events. There's nothing in the WTA rules about them.

Thanks Lambda - the awarding of wild cards for the atp and wta grass events, incl challengers, will be very interesting as lots of players seem to be candidates in the making .

Love the graph, Lambda.

Am expecting Ranah to have a MD wildcard next week (and Matt Rankin)

It does help with Sonay and Talia getting SE and Eliz withdrawing. Decisions are somewhat easier.

I think Ranah was a slam dunk anyway.

She's the LTA's number one junior (barring Matilda). She's only 2005. Just back from Australia so couldn't play earlier.

She's a shoe-in, whatever Talia and Sonay are doing, IMO

ADD: Think there's at least a 25% chance that Talia doesn't play next week anyway. If she has any sort of fatigue, or little niggle issues, which after this week's exploits is well possible, I'd be pretty sure her parents/team would pull her out. After all, it doesn't really change anything for her - this week has been SO amazing.

(Of course, if she's A1 fine, it's brilliant that she's got an SE place. But, unlike the 20-year-old women, say, she's not banking on these events)

Are you sure that Tailia qualifies for an SE in Glasgow?  I thought you actually had to be in the list of qualifiers to get one and she is only way down the list of alts.

I was under that impression as well ST regarding qual lists, but it may have changed since, but it would be fab if we could effectively get two free MDWCs next, albeit thoroughly deserved / earned in this case.
