RE: Week 6 - ITF W25 - Birmingham, UK Hard

Great week for both, happy for Sonay to win and she deserves the points to help with her ranking. Both great girls and players. Happy for Talia to push her close though and shows much promise for the future once she can focus on tennis full time, lots of time for her in the future,

Tennisdad, you've obviously followed her well and follow juniors well, too (and are a tennis dad, I assume? )

In terms of tennis overall (technique, mental, physical, family set-up, the whole shebang), how do you rate Talia, both in the absolute and as compared to Eva, Ranah, Isabelle? Or against the younger ones (Mimi, Hep, Daniela, Amy, etc)?

NB No obligation to answer

Definitely up there with the best of them. I dont know Daniela or Amy.

Let's hope the LTA put Sonay on the funding list ( I assume she isn't yet)

Is Emma still getting LTA funding? I'm not sure she really needs it anymore, would be more useful to someone like Sonay.

A win-win for British Tennis, another title and leg up the rankings for Sonay and valuable experience for Talia who has put herself on the map this week.

As folk have said, very good outcome. Sonay gets the title points and makes another big jump up the rankings and Talia shows her quality again by being so competitive. Wwll done both!!

The Pro Scholarship Programme is for players between ages 16 and 24, who are viewed as having top 100 potential and have won total prize money under $1m (as shown on ATP/WTA websites). So Emma (prize money), Harriet (age + prize money) and Katie Boulter (age) should no longer be on the scheme. However, some agreements are for longer than one year, in which case, it is not clear to me what happens when circumstances (like winning the US Open) change.

In order to be short-listed, there are ranking criteria: age 16 - WTA 800, age 17 - WTA 650, age 18 - WTA 500, age 19 - WTA 350, age 20 - WTA 325, age 21 - WTA 300, age 22 - WTA 250, age 23 - WTA 200, age 24 - WTA 200. So Talia (currently 16, turns 17 in September) will need to be inside WTA 650 to be considered for 2023. Sonay (currently 20) will need to be inside WTA 300 to be considered for PSP funding in 2023.

I can't ever remember being quite so frustrated that a match isn't being streamed. Talia is clearly an amazing player and I want to see what she looks like and how she plays. And I always love watching Sonay and want to see if she can fight back. It's Saturday morning and what better time to watch such an interesting match. Grrrr!!

Especially when said Saturday morning is basically looking at scores on a betting site as a very modest alternative, haha. Even the 'LTA Competitions' Twitter page providing update, and the odd highlight, as they have done in the past, would have been something.

Just when Sonay seems to have been gaining the momentum, Talia back ahead and is now serving for the set. Sonay definitely seems to have been more comfortable receiving than serving these past few matches.

Lta competitions twitter has been 100% focused on Shrewsbury this week, photos, updates etc. Almost like they are trying to keep the womens tournament out of the spotlight.

Yet really the W25 is the higher quality field ( as it generally the case with W25s vs M25s as discussed elsewhere ). And big stories happening here that surely should be being spotlighted.

I also got the impression that in the earlier joint tournaments the men were more getting the main courts and focus?

This is very poor and worthy of questions being asked.

Emma will be in the Elite Support group, no?

www.lta.org.uk/play-compete/performance-tennis-players/player-pathway/elite-support/

What's the purpose of this programme?
To deliver support for the highest performing players, who are targeting major tournament success.

Who's it for?
Singles players who reach the ATP / WTA top 100 and doubles players who reach the ATP / WTA top 32

But it's not really money, or even coaching, from what I can see, it's more the NTC services: "The LTA will facilitate and deliver science, medicine and wellbeing support at the National Tennis Centre and Grand Slams".

The LTA article at the beginning of the Australian Open states that Emma is no longer on the PSP but Harriet and Katie B still are. I did hear mention on commentary last year that Katie had her contract extended because of the time out for her back injury.

Very poor show! I managed to watch the mens which was great and very professional. The womens should be treated the same. A few matches I would have liked to watch this week particularly Isabelle, Talia, Sonay and Lauryn.  So much for promoting womens  tennis. Dont think Judy would be impressed!

I can't remember Glasgow having cameras in recent years (may be wrong), so there could be further disappointment next week. Diatchenko back for another UK W25 so there should be two top 150 players present next week, but all in all, they look similar levels fields with Gleeson being the 18th acceptance on both lists, 10th = 327 and 322 etc.

Q draw should probably be out within the hour.

If Sonay keeps up her impressive form that shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like a great final & well done to Sonay - moving up the rankings nicely despite her relatively limited schedule to date; she has the game & mentality to go considerably higher.
Well done to Talia too impressive result for a 16y old.
