RE: Week 6 - ITF W25 - Birmingham, UK Hard

I didn't see any of her matches the other week, and they were streamed, but it didn't look like Talia was pulling up any trees in Loughborough. She needed a MTB to get past Anna P in quals, and while it did look like it was a perhaps more a case of poor BP conversion rate vs an effective one, or maybe just a bad day, she did still lose 1-6 1-6 to a LL in R1 (who Marni beat in quals), so even just based on that, I didn't see this week coming at all, but here she, just one set away from a W25 title.

 Yeah, it's pretty crazy biggrin

I saw part of two of her matches the other week (none of the Anna P one, a bit of the Italian win, and a bit of the massacre by the LL). It was elegant, nice tennis, with a thinking head on her shoulders. But, as you say, hardly hitting it out of the park. THe LL loss was slightly closer than the 1 & 1 score indicates. But nothing untoward. As people have said, that's why you need events - in the plural - and not just two. Things can happen....

Yeah, I'd heard her name too many times on here, and of course her age, to be thinking she was, you know, the usual possibly out of depth, based on one performance, and it did seem closer than what transpired, but it's still such a start contrast in fortunes on paper biggrin, but yeah, great that she has been able to show what she can do so soon after, well, at least to those actually in attendance anyway, and us lot following live scores smile, and maybe a further chance next week as well if she is actually eligible for an SE, and possible other commitments allow.

I have to say having watched talia at numerous events over the years. The matches at Loughborough did not reflect her playing level at all. Could be nerves at her first event or the fact that she was attending school as well during the tournament. But regardless of the result today she is now showing what shes capable of. Shame this week has not been live-streamed

Tennisdad, you've obviously followed her well and follow juniors well, too (and are a tennis dad, I assume? )

In terms of tennis overall (technique, mental, physical, family set-up, the whole shebang), how do you rate Talia, both in the absolute and as compared to Eva, Ranah, Isabelle? Or against the younger ones (Mimi, Hep, Daniela, Amy, etc)?

NB No obligation to answer

Sonay wins 5-7 6-3 6-2.

I'm happy with that outcome. A competitive looking match, but the one in more need of short term points eventually prevailed, a massive 50 points in the bag, and a good few days off until the Glasgow main draw (with it going past 2 hours).

An outstanding week for both. Congrats to both.

I'm delighted with that result two but pleased for both of them as they have both performed brilliantly. I have been excited about Sonay for a while and was sure she would be making huge strides this year, but I just checked my prediction in the rankings competition and my estimate of 475 now looks ridiculously over cautious. I should have been bolder!!!

Let's hope the LTA put Sonay on the funding list ( I assume she isn't yet)

I think there'll be a fair few us in the same boat ST smile. I was hoping I had put her nearer the 250 mark, but nope, 364 for me no. Mind, I'd obviously far rather Brits surpass my predictions than the other way round biggrin.

I notice Jon has gone for 175 which I think might be rather closer than my guess.  And yes or course I agree that I'd much rather they all exceed our expectations.

Yep, I had 350....

However, Sonay was more pessimistic than all of us

In her interview in Nov 2021, she said:

"My target for next year is to be in the top 500 of the WTA rankings. At the moment Im in the 900s, but I want to get that moving next year."

So, Sonay, aim higher ! We've got your back on this forum
