Week 6 - ITF W25 - Birmingham, UK Hard

SF: KARTAL, Sonay (GBR) WC 820 =CH v SCHUNK, Natasja (GER) 302 (CH=293 2021) {18yo JCH=15}

The German girl is the player who made the final of Junior Wimbledon last year so some people may remember her from there.

Beat Matilda in three sets to get there.

(And then lost in three sets to the Spanish girl)

Schunk also lost to Eden Silva in R1 two weeks ago in Loughborough

(Sonay is the clear favourite with the bookies: 1.4 v 2.75)

Competing well on the whole - four breaks in a row and a hold and it is 3-6 2-0*

7 breaks of serve in a row from the back end of set2 to the start of set 3, but Sonay the first to hold in a while, and leads 3-2*

Followed by yet another break, and a quick hold to love for Sonay (and a first ace of the match). 5-2*

Great win and should get a SE for next week now.

Yay! She had 2 MPs at 40-15* the previous game, but Schunk finally held, and I was a bit concerned when the German went 15-30* the next game, but Sonay wins the final 3 points, and into the final 6-3 in the third, and presumably an SE into Glasgow, although I haven't checked any other candidates, bar potentially Kempen (if required).

Brilliant week for her. Huge win in R1, and backed that up magnificently throughout the week. Great stuff.

Well, there's a pleasant surprise! I was expecting the 18 year old with a far higher ranking than Sonay and a junior career high of 15 to prevail.

The bookies know Peter wink

(although saying that, Talia has upset the odds all week, and it would be absolutely amazing if she had one more in her).

Well done Sonay!

Was thinking of coming down to watch tomorrow but it's just over an hour's drive and I've just been told by the club that it's a 9am start for the final, so possibly not.

Sonay's last 18 months have been amazing. Ended 2020 with 10 straight wins from August onwards. Won 38 of her 42 matches in 2021, and is now 9-2 this year, so that's 57-6 in her last 63 at all levels, and 2 of those defeats were just UKPL placement matches having already qualified. Even if the majority are just UKPL / BT etc. that is amazing consistency, and those matches, especially when now against a wider range of players, will surely have helped her progression.

I've not been on the train as long as some have on here, but it's a good one to get on board biggrin

9 am seems very early given they have been starting at 10 all week; are you sure they have told you correctly?!

Though with her results from the very limited number of tournaments Sonay has played, let alone counters, and probably improving week to week, I don't think anyone really takes much account at all of her current ranking.

Some have tried to estimate her 'true' ranking level but she is making that very difficult. Let's say miles inside the top 500 for starters.

Actually, just reaching the final here here will already take her into the low 600s in the official rankings and the title would take her into the top 550 from just 7 counters.

Well done Sonay - again !
