Week 6 - ITF W25 - Birmingham, UK Hard

Talia wins - great result, she was the least likely of the GB girls to get through.
Two wildcards in the semi final and our best junior has yet to play on the main tour or get a wildcard....Good to see we are getting youngsters on the main tour.

Brilliant from Talia smile

I'd have certainly taken 2 from the 4 making the SFs, but just not the combo I was expecting. What an amazing tournament she has had.

 Absolutely.

And Talia is the one who has so many injuries including 'freak' injuries.

She certainly fractured her wrist in 2020, putting her out for 4-5 months.

And then had some severe ankle sprain.

Not sure either were actually tennis related - just bad luck.

But very disruptive.

So a huge congrats to her.

She credits her coaches and fitness trainers too, but this might have been before moving back south. Anyway, a huge well done to her, and to all her team, past and present, including:

Leo Azevedo, Toni Gordon, Bruno Argudo and Colin Fleming

Jodie has had some nasty abuse on Instagram after the match, not for the first time IIRC.

I fear it will get worse now her boyfriend has a higher profile after the Calcutta Cup victory.

That is frankly disgusting, Im assuming its gambling addicts with Eastern European/Asian handles. Similar demographic to the racial slurs that footballers get. I think a lot of these people think because they are in another country it makes it easier for them to get away with such things. Hopefully social media companies will find a way to deal with this going forward.

Fantastic result from Talia, especially after coming from a break down in both sets.

As for Jodie I do wonder whether she would benefit from breaking out of the JTC/LTA bubble and seeking coaching elsewhere. I think Harriet really benefited from going abroad.

Where in Birmingham is the event being held? Might wend my way down on Saturday if there's still GB interest.

I agree, Ace.

No one is knocking where Jodie is at the moment. Or where she may be in 5 years time.

But it's the potential she has, where she COULD be, or SHOULD be.

That's the crying shame.

(It's a little like Freya but far worse, as in could be far better)

Meanwhile, Sonay - touch wood - seems to be cruising.

And Talia is doing great, 5-4*

In different ways, Freya's decline is up there. I only really got into the British scene around 5 years ago, and she was kind of on her way back over by that stage, so I can't remember her cracking the top 300 and if that was deemed a pretty big shock at the time, and if there was much realistic expectation for her to go much further at that point, but from her POV, it must be pretty grim having a career high 286, and not too far off grand slam quals, before her 19th birthday, but then being stuck in that 500-700 (and nearer the latter) for the best part of 4 years, and looking a million miles away from those grand slam Q positions. Beth has obviously considerably improved her ranking and isn't far off the top 250 (although hopefully that back end wasn't just a purple patch...) so you never know, but it's currently a long, long way off, and I kind of now just see her being there in these type of events, if that makes sense.

I've followed Jodie's career pretty much since she got her WTA ranking and would consider her among my favourite GB players, so it is pretty frustrating. I thought she would have been in and around the top 100 by now this time 3 years ago, pre Surbiton, but there's been nothing for a good while to suggest that that's a realistic possibility. Obviously still young though. I'm sure I've heard you mention regarding comfort zones in the recent past, and she may be content with doing what she's doing regarding training, practice, normal routine etc. especially if she is settled with her bf and his career is more taking off now, but at the same time, as mentioned earlier, it does seem like a really key time in her own career.

Totally agree, something needs to change if she going to move up a level. I really thought she would push on this year. I guess the question is how much does she want it.
