Week 6 - ITF W25 - Birmingham, UK Hard

Oh Jodie. I thought she could win this whole thing

Jodie seems to start well, then fades away after about 50 minutes.

I'm also glad there was no live-stream to distract me !

Probably becomes a time when it needs to move on from the usual 'talent / big game is there, but needs to improve mentality' etc. discussion, and more like she needs to actually look at general bigger changes to her game / environment. Despite ironically being at a career high, I think it seems pretty obvious she has stalled the past couple of years, only a 51% win rate in 2021, which isn't great, especially when the vast majority of those wins were at W25 level, and that's now 5 tournaments in a row, and all but one in 2022, where she'll have exited far earlier than she would have liked / expected.

Bar Gasanova last year, it also seems ages since she actually had a good, eye-catching standout win, Hatouka as well I guess, but certainly few and far between, and these next couple of years are going to be so crucial in how her career pans out. She could of course play for another 10 years, and perhaps crack the top 100 when she is say 27/28, but in terms of reputation, endorsements, excitement, standing etc. she could miss out on a lot of really good years if she is still moseying around the 200 level in the coming 2-3 years. Maybe I'm over-exaggerating, but man, the contrast to where she was 3 years ago before Surbiton, where it looked like there was an exciting talent, is so stark.

Still, I guess there's another event next week, and she'll probably be fresher for Glasgow now.

Sonay has just come through a tight, seesawing first set, was 0-2 down, then 4-2, then 4-4, but has taken it on her third receiving set point, so leads 6-4. smile

I agree, Ace.

No one is knocking where Jodie is at the moment. Or where she may be in 5 years time.

But it's the potential she has, where she COULD be, or SHOULD be.

That's the crying shame.

(It's a little like Freya but far worse, as in could be far better)

Meanwhile, Sonay - touch wood - seems to be cruising.

And Talia is doing great, 5-4*

Sonay is running away with this match.
As the final is on Saturday and I assume Glasgow starts Sunday, there will be no SE's for this comp.

Wide open draw - Jodie would be a strong favourite for the title if she can come through her match

I wouldn't make Jodie a particularly strong favourite for anything   But it would be good to see her win it.

She came through that R2 match but ...

And whatever else may be true about her game and results overall it is not time, especially for her, to move on from "mentality".

Tournaments don't have to overlap to be eligible for a SE. SEs are also given as a reward for reaching the final of the previous week's eligible tournament.

Pemra Ozgen hadn't saved a single break point until this game, in which she has now saved 3 mps, before holding.

 Interesting. I never knew that.

You are quite correct, that rule must have changed in the last couple of years

J. Special Exempt (SE)

1. Eligibility

Special Exempt places are determined based on the criteria set out below. Players competing in

singles can apply for a Special Exempt position for the following Tournament Week, which are

defined as Overlapping and Non-Overlapping tournaments.

a) Overlapping Tournaments

An Overlapping Tournament is defined as a tournament in one week (Week 1) where

matches are played on overlapping days with a tournament being held in the following week

(Week 2) (either because of the standard schedule or because of weather). A player is

eligible to apply for a Special Exempt into the singles Main Draw of a tournament in Week 2

if that player is still competing in the singles competition of a Qualified Tournament in Week

1 and has met the criteria listed below at i), ii), and iii).

b) Non-Overlapping Tournaments

A Non-Overlapping Tournament is defined as a tournament in Week 1 which is completed by

at least the day before the Qualifying event is scheduled to start in Week 2. A player is

eligible to apply for a Special Exempt into the singles Main Draw of a tournament in Week 2

if that player has participated in the singles final of a Qualified Tournament in Week 1 and

has met the criteria listed below at i), ii), and iii).

The criteria for Special Exempt places are:

i) The player is entered in a Tournament in Week 2 and is currently listed on the Qualifying

Acceptance List (not the Alternates List) for that Tournament;

ii) During the Week 1 Tournament, the player in conjunction with the ITF Supervisor must

personally notify (either face-to-face or via telephone) the Week 2 ITF Supervisor of their

Special Exempt request;

iii) The request for Special Exempt must be made prior to the Qualifying Sign-In Deadline (18:00

hours local time the day before the scheduled start of the Qualifying competition) of the

Week 2 Tournament. Players still playing in singles in the Week 1 tournament at the time

of the Qualifying Sign-In Deadline of Week 2, must reconfirm if they are playing the following

day as soon as their match(es) are completed, and if potentially eligible for a Special Exempt

position such position shall be held open until such confirmation has been received.

Special Exempt status shall not be available for players

Brilliant from Talia smile

I'd have certainly taken 2 from the 4 making the SFs, but just not the combo I was expecting. What an amazing tournament she has had.
