A few (GB and non GB) players coming in on the back of successive weeks at Loughborough and the UKPL. A third meeting in less than a week for Nadia and Arina. Tough test for Hep, but hopefully the matches will start catching up with Samavati, who did have a MTO earlier in the week vs Alice.

You'd like to think we'd get Sam through and Freya/Anna in that mini section, but it would be good if we could sneak one (or two) other elsewhere.

Some VERY wide odds in some of the match ups - www.tennisexplorer.com/birmingham-itf/2022/wta-women. Bet365 offering 16/1 on Lauren Bishop to win.

I see we have given a couple of 14 year olds the chance to see what they can do. Hephzibah has a pretty good ranking for a 14 year old. I rather fancy Jasmine's chance of overcoming the 14th seed.

VERY wide indeed. Not often you see 1/200. But some are very close, so will be intersting to see how they turn out. I had a dabble of 50p here and there, hoping to beat CD  wink

Yes, Brooke Black (age 14), Ava Williamson (age 15) and Hep O (age 14) are the real youngsters.

Other juniors are Fran Davis, Jasmine Conway and Issey Purser.

I've gone for three 10ps as of now. Last of the big spenders, that's me

But two of them are on the foreign players, I'm afraid, just based on odds - will be pleased to lose them !

Marni, Mimi and Emma W have been suggested as potential MDWCs and all need 1 main draw win for a WTA ranking. If Lauryn and Danielle qualify they'll also get their third counter for a WTA ranking. Perhaps that's the strategy here? Focus the wild cards on the women that can get a WTA ranking so that is then easier for them to get into 15Ks. When they've got their ranking or run out of wild cards to use then focus on the next group. In the summer swing they'll be a bigger pool to choose from when the US college players are home and perhaps that's where the focus for wild cards will be then

Or perhaps I'm just overthinking it.

You would like to hope those in charge of wildcards do think about it as much at least as we do! Clearly the academy ones, such as Mimi, Hephzibah, will get chances, but also good to see older ones in there who have been to us college and finished, or who are 17 to 22 and didn't, or haven't yet been to uni. It's a big chance for lots of players. With the changes due to covid over last two years a number of those at us college now could feel a bit unlucky that those a year or two younger are getting these chances. So will be good if a good number of them get chances in the summer.

Eliz has taken the first set from young Brooke 6-1

Disappointing that there's no streams, especially with the GB men's event being covered (I know different venues). Hopefully they will emerge during the course of the week, but won't hold my breath.

In addition to Eliz, Joanna has taken a wide first set vs Soumeya. Lauren Bishop was holding her own but went from 3-2 to 3-6, but Francesca Davis has just taken the first set 6-3 against the 11th seed, so a potential upset there - guaranteed at least a MTB.

Quick matches (in under one-hour) and one-sided scores as Eliz beats Brook, Lauren loses and so does Soumeya

Francesca struggling now too. At least her match has lasted an hour,.

Francesca's also looking unlikely to pass the hour. A great start for her, but she only won 10 points in the second set bagel, and is 1-6 down in the MTB. When you see some of the scores, and the match times (48m, 53m etc.), it kind of emphasises how unfortunate Emily was to draw Lauryn in Q1.

Mind, Francesca has now passed the hour, and while still a lot of work to do, she is coming back a bit in the MTB, 6-8*, and considering she was 8/1 pre match, that looks a really good effort.

Back on serve now, *7-8.
