Phoenix Weir

Phoenix deserves his own thread as not only does he have a cool name but, as of 31 Jan 2022, he has entered the adult singles rankings, aged just 16, and thoroughly deservedly too.

31/01/22 - Singles ATP 1777

Many of us have been watching his progress in juniors, but it was at Bath ITF 25 that people really took notice as, being on livestream, he came through qualis, beating Patrick Foley and Toby Martin, and then beat Anton Matusevich (ranked in the top 500) in the first round, 6-3 6-4, before losing to Jan Choinski. And he did it in style, playing an excellent game of attack, and percentage tennis, with flair, and a cool head.

The family come from Bingham. And caused a bit of a stir (quite rightly) when they highlighted how Phoenix was not selected for the academies, despite winning most of the major events (and - more importantly - having (quite clearly IMO) a lot more potential than some of the others they've selected who are simply 'well taught')

There may well be much more to follow here in the next few years - let's hope so.

Well, you've triggered my interest, thank you. And, as you say, great name, that I might even remember LOL
